Well technically that's an SUV but I know what you're talking about.

I have to say the driver did pull a great 180

Ever notice that you never hear about unintended acceleration in cars with manual transmissions?

A lot of people who buy Toyota's buy them because they need a car not because they like them. So their skill level is low, and this is what you get.

Well you do get just as many silly happenings with manual transmissions over here - I think it is a numbers game. Though I must say that people who have been driving for most of their lives with manual transmissions who then get automatics in later life seem to be confused by the lack of a third pedal.

Friend of mine posted on Facebook today that her Rav4 did the same thing. Accelerated in first and then in reverse for no reason. Happened while she was picking up kids at school. Luckily she hit a car between her and a line of kids waiting for a bus.

Hopefully totaled. One fewer trucklet on the roads is a GOOD thing in my book!

and if you listen towards the end of the video it says"toyota has reviewed the "black box"data recorder and the brakes were never applied".BUT it never said that they also noticed it did accelerate with no input from the pedal.this is what you get with drive by wire.

I was tired and driving my brother's automatic Buick once. I went to shift at around 45mph and kicked what my leg *thought* was a clutch pedal. We found out that day that the Buick's brakes were in great condition, and that the ABS works :p

I don't understand why we are seeing lots of drive by wire failures all the sudden. All modern diesels are drive by wire, and they don't go careening off on their own.

This video looks like a classic mixup between the brake and gas pedal.

I can bet a thou that the user has an iphone type device in hand. No car accelerates like that on its own and the brakes are more powerful than the engine/trans in first gear to stop it dead. They are still mechanical, you pushes the pedal you creates hydraulic pressure to lock the wheels in standstill in that vehicle.

The stories of sudden forward and sudden backward on its own are a pot of bovine male excrement.

Such drivers should be relieved of their driving license for a decade.

Its probably not that common, but on my Mazda I know sometimes it revs or stays revved when I let off the gas and push in the clutch. Its hasnt been a problem but I have noticed it. It always happens when the clutch is engaged though.

My SOHC traditional cable/throttle body (non cruise control) Ford does that too, it's the idle air controller keeping the revs up while you shift. If I pop it out of gear at low revs without touching the clutch it drops to 500rpm and almost stalls.

Fly by wire - ooooooooooh - give me a spring and a rod and a bushing that can ping out and get lost everytime.

you want to talk brakes eh!heres a good one for ya courtesy of my 2000 chevy suburban.wife kept telling me the thing didn't want to stop and was making a funny noise.but every time i drove it it was fine, then one day i was coming up to a stop sign start to press on the brake.aaaand here comes the sound, yeah if you have experienced abs on slick roads you get this brr brr brr sound.thats what i was getting AND it was not stopping,i damn near rearended a car.but my old school habits kicked in and i let off the brakes and hit em again and it stopped about 3 ft short of the guy in front of me.to say it scared the crap out of me is an understatement.and i might add this was in july on prefectly dry roads.it was like i was on solid ice, there was no slowdown whatsoever.nice way to design your brakes eh!!after doing some research turns out that i wasn't the only one with this problem.seems the abs sensor in the front wheels is bolted to the hub.what happens is it gets rust buildup under the bracket and pulls the sensor away from the encoder wheel,so basically it loses it's mind as it thinks the wheel has stopped turning.so i took them apart and cleaned em up and haven't had an issue since.

You could not have said it better. I have a friend who bought a Prius. Its a pile of crap. Parts keep falling off. Anyway, he never understood my fascination with large powerful cars. He has flat out told me a car is just for getting around. As expected, he is a HORRIBLE driver (like most Toyota drivers). driving with him is scary. Of course when there is an issue (he gets beeped at), its ALWAYS the other persons fault for some reason.
