You can make your driving experience as costly as desired. $3000 buys a lot of gas btw.

Well, yeah that is clearly an economy car that is economical on fuel, but fuel savings are more than made up for in parts and battery replacement.

To be clear though, that is not a master cylinder as we think of it. I am quite sure that the Prius has regenerative breaking which allows the energy soaked up from braking to be put back into the battery. Stands to reason that the mechanism for controlling this will be more complex than a simple hydraulic cylinder.

Be careful what you ask for, you might get it.

Forwarded the link to a coworker with a Prius. He replied he already had to replace that unit a couple of years ago at $2-3k. Rusted out from underneath. Sounds like there is an NHTSA case in the making. They take brakes seriously.

A person using a Prius is more inclined to save money rather than save trees (putting on flame suit)

3 grand for a M/C + booster + ABS doohikey replacement because toyota packed them into one assembly to rip off customers... What about the money I was supposed to save?

This is the same type of system Mercedes used / uses on their cars... SBC. And they had to do a recall too.

Whoa..... hold on there.

Those are rather harsh words for someone driving a 18 year old, 2000lb+ luxury sedan which gets ~35mpg and rides like a dream...... oh wait... I drive one of those too...

If this was my car, I would have converted to straight hydraulic brakes.

I put on my flame helmet then I read the last bit The weird part is that even after spending on keeping up with the benz, I still am better financially than a car note and fuel cost.

with a Prius you cant do that, The drive system will shut down and prevent booting up (yes booting up - the car actually has an O/S that is loaded up)

No feedback from brakes - All power is shutdown with the mid screen gone fully red (seen that once in a rental) more of the car giving the one finger salute.

If you take care of them a Mercedes is one of the cheapest cars to own.

Like the Rolls-Royce dealers used to say.... Only your first one is expensive.

The main battery on a Prius was once priced at $7,800. Toyota wondered why they never sold one.

It was because they had overlooked a market force everyone here understand: The auto salvage yard.

The battery is built in such a protected manner than they normally survive even the most terrible crash. When the car goes to the salvage yard this is the part the wrecking yard guys sell first. Usually for about $1,200. I don't know what is required to install it, but it can be done by anyone at home who understands what a took kit is.

So Toyota recently dropped the price of the battery to be more in line with the wrecking yards. The wrecking yards just dropped their price.

I understand that a MC new from Toyota might cost a bundle, but what would one cost used? And.... Can they be rebuilt?

There are a few Prius MC's on Ebay right now for 2009 and before. Prices run around $65 + shipping.

For 2010 they went high tech. There is a new 2010 assembly offered at $2300, but used ones seem to go for right at $300 or best offer.

I could not find a rebuild kit.

I cannot think you can rebuild them completely without a full testing jig

Air shocks on a Bentley are $1,600 each new. Rebuilt ones are about $1,000.

The parts to rebuild it consists of about $30 worth of o-rings and one very special sized sleeve that has to be machined out. And then they must be tested, which requires a special test bench.

So while this Toyota part is very expensive now a drop in the future will depend on the material costs and the time involved to rebuild them. If a profit is there someone will try to make it.

ZF built power steering units for the Audi 5000 and they would normally last 150,000 miles. When you needed a new one the cost was mind blowing. Therefore ZF started rebuilding them and offering the rebuilds at $700 each.

The maker of the Prius unit could easily do the same.

And..... Since this is a safety related part there has to be some part of the cost that is nothing but the cost of insurance if it fails in operation. A used part would not involve this cost.
