I thought they were pretty cool, at least as far as lawn mowers go.
Much prefer an upper scale tractor w/ hydrostatic trans done right these days. I doubt any of the low-end variety garden tractor hydro stats are worth having though. The cheesy fan belt drive hydro on the JDs are a joke.

well with a vertical shaft engine you don't have a choice.now the older horizontal shaft engines like my jd 332 diesel used a shaft to the hydro.

The JD hydros I've has the misfortune of driving/ working on have been terrible. I don't know if never models or other manufacturers are better, but I'll take a stick shift wheel horse any day

I have a B7100 Kubota 4wd HST and love it. Need to learn more about how to properly maintain it. i can't wait to see CLK's new bike. Knowing his luck, it'll be about a '59 1200 or whatever monster engine they had then. Lay it down and ya need a crane to pick it back up.

Look under the vertical shaft drives and see the cheesy fan belt. Man they look fragile. But, they prolly work out well for the homeowner. But for how long under rigorous service?

I've never owned any lawn tractor but my 1972 International Cub Cadet 73. I've looked at the new JDs and Cub Cadets, but don't need one. They're awful pretty, but I wonder how well they hold up? Probably just fine for the homeowner that uses it only for their personal property.

Horizontal-shaft, Kohler 7-HP, Shaft-drive, 3-speed. I'll post a pic later. I don't recall it ever breaking down to the extent of needing to take it in to a dealer since my folks bought it new. It pushed snow for decades up north, and now cuts grass in Texas once in a while.
