Anyone have experience with a 1999-2004 Isuzu rodeo?

I have a friend I went to high school with and she recently had a severe stroke that has rendered her disabled. (40yrs old) her husband has left her and her parents are now taking care of her. She has a 1999 Isuzu rodeo 4x4 with the v-6 engine and it has been maintained extremely well. She is the only owner. It actually runs and drives great but periodically it will not start. I may happen 2 or 3 times a day or it may only happen once a month. Her parents have taken it to the shop a few times but they can never seem to duplicate the problem and the mechanic cannot find any codes. They are selling it for $2000 bucks and it has around 120,000 miles. Does anyone here have any experience with these SUVs or know of a good Isuzu forum? I would like to help them out if I can. They need the money for medical expenses.... Thanks in advance.

This was also sold as the Honda Passport back in the day if that helps you find a forum.

One of my father's employees picked one up for around $2200. I think it was a 98 and it was the Honda version. His was a bit beat up but seemed like an overall solid vehicle and very comfortable to ride in. His only issues were that there was no way to lock the spare to the vehicle (lives in a high crime area) and the transmission requires specials tools to service it (I guess like any other Honda). I wish I could tell you more but I can't.

That's right! I totally forgot the passport was the same...I will check the Honda forum. Heck it had to be a good vehicle if Honda felt they had to rebadge it

I know two people who have this generation Isuzu Rodeo. Both owners are original owners and have well over 200,000 miles on them with little trouble.

On that Isuzu there are some common problems of that area that can give similar problems as you describe.
1. Fuse box connection become loose and corroded check fuel pump fuse.
2. Make sure Vac line to throttle body is on and that the hose is not decayed where its not effective
3. IAC (idle controler) take off and clean the balck stuff out of it.

Years ago I worked at a Honda dealer for a moment or two. Always got a kick out of the Honda fanboys who overflowed with praise for their Passports and how they'd never buy any American "crap". It was fun to tell them that their Passport wasn't really a Honda, but a re-badged Izuzu, and that with GM's ties with Izuzu then, it was really just a General Motors product. Better still to open the hood and show them all the GM parts. Good times, good times.

Well since I sold the Lincoln...I picked up this rodeo tonight. WOW that 3.2 is strong...This thing will fly and the shifts are quick and so smooth....It has 182k
on it...about 60k more than I thought. But I was tickled to death with how well it ran that I bought it anyway Spotless inside and drives straight as an arrow!

Got it for $1800. I spent $177 for 2 new KHumos and got rid of the shaky ass wranglers on the front. Got the oil changed and a new filters and wiper blades. It has sat so long the dissentagrated when I used them today in a small shower.

I have a laundry list of to dos now that the 240d is pretty straight now. Twalgamuth sold me a used radiator for a fair price and it looked great and works even better! NO LEAKS!

Anyway the rodeo needs.

-starter...I have to climb under and hit it with a hammer ever so often to get it to crank. Otherwise just a click when you turn the key.

-banged up on both front corners from and icy road pile up a few years ago...Not bad I already sanded the exposed rusty spots and touched up with paint

-rear wiper inop

-interm wipers inop but other speeds work....wipers do not return to rest automatically gotta time it...fun lil game

-1 rear window inop

-A/C all new and freezes your butt off. new radiator..4500lb hitch

- I have no records because they disappeared during the divorce.....I just want to know the BIG question....TIMING BELT...so I am gonna try and get to it this weekend to see if I can look at it. Its buried underthe hood...should be fun

I joined planetisuzoo.com so I may be there for a while tackling come of these issues.

yeah ole truck cleaned up pretty well...I am really pleased...Amazing what 2 new tires will do for a freeway ride....smoooooth.

Yes my friends condition is sad for such a young age...She has high blood pressure and was a little overweight...Not bad...maybe 30 pounds..Anyway she started working out and eating right..the weight fell off and she was feeling great. She stopped taking her high blood pressure meds because she thought with the new lifestyle change she would not need it..bad move..bad move..her high blood pressure is hereditary and she would always have it no matter how healthy she is living.. I am assuming. Anyway that's what happened with her. me friend Melanie

These Isuzu 3.2/3.5's are gas hogs big time. 13-14 mpg on a good day.
