A bit excessive, don't you think??

Classmates rally around Princeton student who left gun in car :: WRAL.com

After a weekend filled with skeet competition, an Eagle Scout student forgot that the unloaded shotgun was in his car, so he asks if he can leave the school property to take it home...instead, they call the cops and arrest him, then expel him.

In this same school, another administrator was found to have an unloaded weapon in his car 2 years ago, and they give him an unpaid, 3 day suspension.

It was ignored 2 years ago when an administrator in the same district did roughly the same thing.

I sure am glad those administrators weren't around when I was in high school. They would have dealt with cardiac arrest. There weren't very many of the boys cars or pickups that didn't have a shotgun and a .22 while in the parking lot. Many of them were pickups with gun racks in the back glass and the windows rolled down.

I wonder how we all managed to win District Championships in two of our three main sports, get good enough grades to all graduate, carry plenty of firepower in our vehicles with no incidents of any kind. Amazing!

When I was a boy, you can do certain things that kids today cannot either. Regardless of how we feel, times have changed. Arguing that because it was done in the past is an excuse for today is meaningless. The question is what rule was in effect at the time the official did it. If the same rule was in effect, it is unfair. If the rules were different, play ball.

Do I believe it was harsh? Sure. Unfortunately, if you don't enforce a rule uniformly and take it on a "case by case" basis, how will you have consistency? If it were left up to me, I'll slap his wrists, scream at him and make him give a speech about gun awareness. OTOH, the next guy would throw the book at him. And then the fun begins. You get all kinds of arguments about "Why was he allowed to do this and not me?".

The unintended consequences of poorly written zero tolerance rules. A former student of mine wound up in a similar situation in high school. A rural school you'd think would have better sense. Straight A senior student on his way to a good college for Pharmacy. He worked every afternoon on a ranch riding fences and liked to carry a 12ga. for snakes. Left it behind the seat in it's scabbard. Campus security playing peek into the cars spotted it. His case went to the school board. There was such a pitchforks and torches scene at the meeting (myself included) that the board voted unanimously to purge his record and allow him to graduate with honors. They even publicly apologized.

Who says that consistency for the sake of consistency is a good thing? Let the people argue -- f--k 'em.

One day I had a couple of guns I took to be appraised for insurance and one for repair. I had them in back of my Station Wagon. I always keep anything of value covered with a blanket so they were covered. I forgot about them and drove to work at PU with them back there. If it had been discovered I could have been fired.

Is it fair? If I had been fired I probably would have thought so but on the other hand if I were in charge of security I suspect I would think it was an essential policy.

If we had a lot of poisonous snakes around like they do in some parts of the country, I suspect a more gun tolerant policy might be the norm.

Consistency for the sake of fairness is a good thing. How would you like to be the guy I punish for an offense while letting the other person skate because I saw something redeeming in them? I'll bet you'd squeal like a stuck pig if you were on the short end of the stick.

Well spoken for a man who probably has no clue about dealing with them when they argue. See post 3. It's easy to say what you say as long as somebody else is having to clean up that mess, isn't it?

It depends. If you got fired by me while a hot instructor got a spaking, you'd be right that it wasn't. Therein lies the question. Do we want something arbitrary or something that is fair?

Back then, there weren't any a$$wipes who felt the need to stroll into the halls to unload a few shells either!

Of course back then, you couln't pin it on violent video games either...unless "Pong" was grassroots violent!

I thought back then they didn't have video games to play with? Thought that the only thing that you had to play with was yourself?

Perhaps that's why the youth were smiling more back then...
