"Stand & Fight" NRA Convention in Houston

"If you are an NRA member, you deserve to be proud," Wayne LaPierre, the NRA's chief executive wrote to members last week, saying they "exemplify everything that's good and right about America."

On tap . . . Sarah Palin, Ted Cruz, Rick Perry, Rick Santorum, Bobby Jindal and Ted Nugent . . . wow, talk about your right wing star power!

It has amazed me for many years that so many people believe everyone either has the exact beliefs list of a democrat OR the exact beliefs list of a Republican. These type people find it impossible to believe that there could be anyone with even a slight variation in their personal beliefs list.

Edition:

This statement was meant to point out that elchivito, not exactly a right winger, is also open minded enough to not exactly be a gun control at all cost kind of guy either. He is, as are many non conservative folks on here, a good guy who happens to mostly believe in something other than conservative principles. From time to time he has proven his intellectual honesty. His stance on gun control, that does not seem to fall directly in line with the Democratic platform, is a good example of that.

This is a discussion forum. Except for the few who have met each other personally and gotten to know each other, we do NOT know as much about others on this forum as much as some folks seem to think.

Due to my widely known general conservatism, many people here THINK that they know my opinions on everything and that is absolutely not so. Our world is not limited to only two specific lists of beliefs with no variation. Anyone who believes that, is probably someone who DOES follow a specific list written by someone else.

You're a shining example of just that. I'll let you figure which.

Okay then, give me a copy of each parties platforms and I will show you a list of items on each that I don't agree with. There are many folks here that could not honestly do that.

I bet I could. I'd have to see each list first but I can tell you I wouldn't give a rat's ass about either one.

In this area, Ann Coulter's recent column makes for interesting reading.
Ann Coulter - Official Home Page

She discusses, among other things, John Lott's research for More Guns Less Crime. It makes for interesting reading.
She talks about how Lott is always referred to as "the discredited..." Yet, liberals have not discredited his research. His chief antagonist, John Donahue was a no-show for their much promoted debate--twice. Yet now he says Lott libels him, by pointing out his failure to appear. Its been FIVE years--you think he could reschedule the debate if he really wanted to.
Its also interesting how liberals, to whom Lott had sent his data for peer review, refused to make him available to him after a computer crash lost some of it.
Where is that vaulted liberal academic pursuit--following the truth no matter where it leads-----(as long as it leads in a progressive direction)
I only point this out for those who actually believe that there is no Progressive agenda among academe.
Please, if Ann is wrong in her statements of fact, point them out. Merely attacking her because of her looks, or some other trivial thing is a poor substitute for the pursuit of truth.
If more guns really lowers the threat of crime, then do we want to lower crime, or promote crime?

So does this mean that you have read both platforms and found that I disagree with everything on one of them and agree with everything on the other?

You seem to spend the vast majority of your time discrediting the Democratic platform Larry. Tell you what, as a purely academic exercise, if you believe both sides are full of it; discredit the Republican platform. Here you go:

JOB CREATION: Economic growth, not government stimulus. No subsidies, no spending.

SMALL BUSINESS:
The GOP pledges to reform the tax code to make it easier for businesses to generate more capital and create more jobs.
TAXES: Taxing the rich is redistribution of income.
Extend the Bush tax cuts of 2001 and 2003 pending reform of the tax code. Eliminate taxes on interest, dividends and capital gains altogether for lower- and middle-income taxpayers. Repeal the estate tax and the alternative minimum tax.
Require a super majority for any tax increases.
MARRIAGE:
Affirm the rights of states and the federal government not to recognize same-sex marriage. Back a constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman.
VOTER INTEGRITY:
Legislation to require photo identification for voting and to prevent election fraud.
GUN CONTROL: No legislation to limit magazine capacity or reinstate an AWB.
ABORTION:
The party states that "the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed." No public funding for abortion services or prenatal care.
ENERGY:Back the exploration and development of the Outer Continental Shelf and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. Support for new coal-fired plants that will be low-cost, environmentally responsible and efficient.
"We will end the EPA's war on coal and encourage the increased safe development in all regions of the nation's coal resources." Prohibit the EPA from moving forward with new greenhouse gas regulations "that will harm the nation's economy and threaten millions of jobs over the next quarter century."
MEDICARE and MEDICAID:
Move both Medicare and Medicaid away from "the current unsustainable defined-benefit entitlement model to a fiscally sound defined-contribution model." Support a Medicare transition to a premium-support model with an income-adjusted contribution toward a health plan of the enrollee's choice. Age eligibility in Medicare must be made more realistic in light of longer life spans.
Transform Medicaid services for low income people into a block grant program in which the states would be given the flexibility to determine the best programs for their residents.
IMMIGRATION:
"We oppose any form of amnesty for those who, by intentionally violating the law, disadvantage those who have obeyed it."
Justice Department will halt lawsuits against Arizona, Alabama and other states that have enacted tough measures against illegal immigrants. Federal funding should be denied to universities that provide in-state tuition rates to illegal immigrants. It advocates making English the official national language.
HEALTH CARE:
Repeal the AHCA. Propose a market based plan and improved quality of care.
EDUCATION:
"Consumer choice", including home schooling, single-sex classes, full-day school hours and year-round schools. Replace family planning education with abstinence programs.
DEFENSE:
Increase spending and take a more agressive stance towards rogue states like Iran, N. Korea and China.

I didn't agree with four items; energy, Medicare Medicaid, defense and immigration.

Got a copy of the demo platform?

Btw,that was a quite abbreviated version. I did not see their stance on the UN, so I am sure that other things are also missing from that summary.

Did you not understand that I was complimenting you in what you wrote?

So, to be clear, you disagree with drilling in ANWR? The privatization of Medicare? Increased military spending? What part of the Rep. immigration policy do you disagree with?

You can look up the full platform, I only listed bullet points. Same goes for the Dem. platform, only in that instance I'd be real curious to know what parts you AGREE with.

I have tried to download the dem platform in the past with no luck. It's as if they are afraid someone will read it. If you find it, you can list which items that you disagree with like I did with the other one.

How about some details. Looks to me like you just picked some so we'd all say "oh look Larry disagrees with some Republican platform planks after all. Gee, and we thought he was just a Republican shill, silly us."

I never claimed, as you did, that I disapproved of anything in either party's platform. I have nothing to justify, I made no claims.
