o.k. the t-birds i'm sure were close to or over 2 ton.as for the lincolns i think they were over 3.6200 lbs if i remember correctly.what i find funny about them is in the james bond movie goldfinger.goldfingers sidekick oddjob takes a guy for a ride in a lincoln.shoots him then takes it and crushes it.he then puts it in the back of a little ranchero and drives off.if it was a complete suicide door lincoln it should have broke that poor ranchero in half.but if i remember it did'nt even squat.

Actually, I believe the T Birds, might be lighter than the Continental of the era. A base Ford of that time weighed 3,500. The Lincoln with it's FE, and all the bigger components HAD TO BE significantly heavier than a Galaxie.

Also makes sure the races are seated.

That's observant!

The Ranchero might be worth more than the Lincoln Continental today.

+50% of the readershiip here wouldn't know the model Ranchero, or maybe what the model of Continental was, much less remember the scene in the movie or who Odd Job was. Odd Job was a badass in the film. A fat Jackie Chan that moved slower with no sense of humor. Why was he always wearing a tux? I like the intro theme music to Goldfinger.

If by FE, you are referring to engine series, Lincoln used engines from the MEL family well into 1968.

Don't forget the killer hat :D

Also it was a FALCON RANCHERO

I think there is a little squat in the rear as shown in the pix...
but Man that is one tough Falcon!

Back to the GOAT

What happened to the spindles?
Will it be newer A body brakes or the originals that go on the car?
4bbl? TriPower? RAM AIR?

Etc

I would replumb to create a dual-circuit hydraulic system, and use a newer MC, rotors and calipers. There have to be kits out there that make this doable. Imagine being in traffic, and the Honda Fit in front of you panic-stops on a dime.

catmandoo62 05-15-2013 11:35 PM

67 already has the dual circuit master cyls.

What? Hollywood showed something that was not real? If they took out the engine and transmission and differential it would maybe weigh 3000 to 3500? Course the ranchero was what, a quarter ton truck? Prolly not rated to carry 3500 either, so by the time they put it in there it must have been basically a cardboard box painted to look like a crushed Lincoln.;)

Interesting discussion at the above link. Apparently the ranchero has a rated capacity of 800#. One person said the Lincoln was crushed without its engine. Another said the first shot of the scene they broke the suspension on the Ranchero so used a cut down crushed Lincoln for the second take. Personally the cube bears no resemblance to a Lincoln in the shot so it may have been an aluminum something or a cardboard box adorned with crushed things.

I can remember seeing these old square type crushers in use. All they were after was the sheet metal.

The cars that went through this process had been stripped of their useable parts while they sat in a salvage yard. When a yard was filling up with cars that were not selling parts anymore a crusher would be called and they would bring a mobile rig out to crush what was left.

Therefore the drivetrain was gone as well as the gastank. The interior was burned out, the tires and brake drums were normally sold and even a few body parts might be missing. Therefore all that was being crushed was what was left of the body.

And that steel was recycled. If the engine block was left it had to be removed as it was made of cast iron which was recycled into more cast iron and not sheet steel.

I have removed all the body parts from a full sized car before and stored them in a small shed. When you get right down to it a car is mostly air by volume.

But back to the film.... If the Conti was too heavy even in its' stripped down form I am sure a compact car could have been crushed as well. After all, the screenplay just said something like:

Exterior, Day, Salvage yard.

A crushed cube that was once a car is dropped into the back of a small truck. Odd-Job is seen in close-up smiling as he drives away with the cube containing Mr. Solo and his Million Dollars.

By the way... If you will notice the cars the next time you watch the film you will see almost nothing but Ford products once the action moves to the US. I guess they had a deal with Ford to supply all the cars they needed.

I wonder where that Falcon is now?

catmandoo62 05-16-2013 10:32 PM

they seemed to deal with everybody.in man with golden gun it was amc,in live and let die it was GM,diamonds are forever ford again.

Found out today that the factory a/c in this car makes it a very rare automobile.

Pretty darn good AC in those cars too. It was GM AC before the dreaded R4.
