USA spec, so I think 1992 to 1993 as for 1994 it would have been badged an S500.

Thanks for the info. So because there is no S does that mean that it is not a US car but a euro.

Prior to 94 they had a number-letter designation, later the switched to letter-number. I'm not sure why (well, I do know -- its brand consistency and recognition but its still silly).

500SEL vs. S500 depending only on year, they are both w140 chassis -- I don't think the naming convention was any different for euro models but I am not entirely sure - someone please correct me if thats wrong.

Also, agreed - very nice car but they seem to have a stigma of being over complicated and consequently expensive if things go wrong.

They start to disappear from the roads, especially the coupes are becoming rare birds. Never liked them that much but lately I become rather fond of them, they have a presence very few cars have.

A well respected Mercedes Tech in the Tulsa area warned me off of 140's for a long number of reasons.

I won't go into them here, but a quick search on the web will turn up a lot of information.

There was a white one in a local wrecking yard about a month ago. I got the complete stereo and some window switches. It was complete.

When I was a kid, this was the symbol of class. I always think the tires are way too skinny considering the size of the car, some thicker rubber and the w140 still gushes with class and sophistication, maintenance aside. Its one of the best looking big benzes, about on par with the w126 IMO.

I feel extra nerdy because I was basing its age off the fact that it still had the reverse aid antennas in those pics, meaning its a very early 95 or earlier.

I believe when they first came out the car unloaded exceeded the tire capability from the factory....a bit of an embaressment for the mb factory.

They seem quite cheap over here at the moment.

Lots of car for the purchase price.

A good W140 is still the best ridding car you can buy today for under $100k.

A well sorted S600 is sublime, Mercedes spent $1 billion dollars developing the W140 in the early 90's and it shows.

The W140 is the one of the last of the old world Mercedes, which the G wagon being the last.

I would say that it's between 1900 and 2013. Hope this helps.
