Girl perhaps killed for her organs...

This story made me really sad, particularly if the "doctor" in the clinic did see her as an opportunity.

Quote:
Gurkiren Kaur, 8, died moments after a doctor treating her for dehydration in India’s Punjab region gave her an injection, according to her family.
When her body was returned to the U.K., it was found to be missing all of her internal organs. The organs have still not been located. Her grief-stricken family believes they may have been removed for sale.
Girl's organs removed after vacation death; family believes they may have been sold

I don't think the Indians will offer the doc the kindness of a lethal injection -- they still use the noose, British-style.

I think India has just made it to my "special list" of countries. In other words, places I won't go unless:

1. I'm being paid fairly large money to go there.
2. I get to bring an M-16/M-4 and plenty of M855 ball, body armor, and a kevlar helmet.
3. I'm going with lots of friends who also bring M-16/M-4, plenty of M855 ball, body armor, and kevlar helmets.
4. Our own medical support, logistics support, close air support, etc.

I'd much rather just check out the UK or Ireland. I have it on good authority that they have very good beer there.

Very sad. I hope they do get a chance to put a noose around that doctors neck.

The picture is haunting. She looks like a happy and enthusiastic little kid.

It's a horrible side-effect of the more or less miracle of organ transplant. Lot of people with deep pockets wanting healthy young organs and lots of people walking about with healthy young organs on board.

I suspect we'll see this more and more.

That this happened to a middle class kid from England is what brings it to light. Imagine the families of poor Indian kids who die in clinics and are returned minus parts. Nobody cares and it's unlikely their families have much recourse. Hopefully instead of hanging the guy they'll keep him around long enough to uncover his network. My Wife is from the Philippines and said they are kidnapping Street Kids to sell the Organs.

Back in the early 1990s I was in Singapore and on the TV News there was a suspicion that in Red China they were Killing Prisoners and saying they had died in Prison of Illness and their Organs were being sold.

There was an Indian Patient at the County Hospital dieing of issues with His Lungs. The Family wanted Him to have a double Lung Transplant and said they were willing to Pay upfront for the Proceedure.

The Dr. was having a hard time explaining to them that the Patient was in too bad of shape (His other Organs were gradually failing) to have the Transplant. And, they were not going to waste a good set of Lungs on someone they did not have a reasonable chance of surviving the Operation.

From what I overheard if the Patient had been in His own Country and is Family would pay the would have obtained the Lungs for the Transplant and gone done the operation.

Art Caplan, co-chairman of a 2009 United Nations task force on organ trafficking, said that the evidence in Gurkiren’s case doesn’t point to organ theft.
“I’m skeptical,” said Caplan, director of the division of medical ethics at NYU Langone Medical Center. “Whenever I see somebody say that somebody killed somebody for parts, I’m skeptical.”
The World Health Organization estimates that more than 106,000 organs were transplanted globally in 2010. That included about 10,000 kidneys that were illegally obtained, the agency said.
Organ transplant is actually a complex effort that involves precise coordination to be successful. Blood and tissue types of both donor and recipient must match, the size of the organs must be compatible and the organs must be preserved after death, Caplan notes. In this child’s case, the timeline doesn’t suggest that any of that would have happened.
“Was she on life support?” he said. “Do you have container to put the organs in? This girl is missing internal organs, but it doesn’t add up to that.”
Excerpt from the article before we all jump on the harvesting organ bandwagon.

Thought those came from Death Row prisoners? I have no issue with that unless you can show that they were cataloged first then the sentence issued.

Go to Ireland for whiskey and Guiness. UK for your beer and cider.

What plausible reason then for the removal of her organs? If there was indeed a black market operation of stealing organs for large profit, it would stand to reason that they had rapid means of matching organs to paying clients.

As for using the organs of executed convicts, strikes me as a slippery slope. If a prisoner was in the Ted Bundy or Tim McVeigh 'guilty as sin' category I suppose it does seem good and proper for their organs to be used for some good. But if it becomes an assembly line, much too easy to increase the number of executions, and on flimsier grounds, which would appear to be the way it happens in China, that is, flimsy grounds.

See post 11. It isn't simply the matching. They had problems with the timeline for that to happen.

You are already on that slope when you say "It is ok for TB or McVeigh but not so for another executed person.

They execute people for crimes we might not think merits it. Asia executes drug dealers. They don't care what else goes on but if you are classified as a dealer, you die. Maybe you don't agree but that is a far cry from saying it is flimsy.
