SUV naming -- what happened???

The Durango:

The Explorer:

The Expedition:

The Defender:

The Yukon:

The Tahoe:

The Land Cruiser:

The Suburban:

Wait, what? Where was the Suburban when they were handing out cool SUV names? The Land Cruiser? Sure. The Durango? The Explorer? Oh yeah. But the Suburban? WHO in GM's marketing department thought THIS was tough, or cool, or respectable, or manly in any sense of the word? This is all we get for one of the largest SUVs ever made?

Seriously, GM?

Iirc the suburban is the longest running automobile name in the industry, first suburbans were in the early 30s and the name hasn't changed since. It was cool back then, I guess.

It had a somewhat different connotation back then. Think: country estates, log and stone "camps", horse farms. Ticky tacky houses not so much.

Back in the 30's.... "Several automotive companies in the United States used the "suburban" designation to indicate a windowed, station wagon type body on a commercial frame"

plus

With the end of production of the Dodge Town Wagon in 1966 and the Plymouth Suburban station wagon in 1978, only General Motors continued to manufacture a vehicle branded as a "Suburban", and GM was awarded an exclusive trademark on the name in 1988.

plus

GMC's equivalent to the Chevrolet model was originally named "Suburban" as well, until re-branding it to "Yukon XL" for the 2000 model year.

I suppose that in the thirties, suburbs were a thing of the future.

as said above - suburban was mostly considered horse country, log and mud etc. hence suburban.

-Diesel Suburban
-Diesel fullsize work van (with porthole windows)
-300TD (if I have a shop to work on it in)

Remember when that big-assed Ford SUV came out it was jokingly called the Valdez.

While it's origin 80 years ago was more exciting, sadly it's now become pretty apropros. The majority are dying a slow, unexciting death in the garages of suburban moms across the country with jaunts to the grocery store, mall and school.

Mine gets beat to heck hauling products to jobsites, playing mule at our camp in Maine, playing mud-bogger on the 1.5 mile dirt road down to said camp during spring thaw, towing boat/camper/utility trailers, while providing relative comfort for my wife and I and 4-6 kids and their stuff to their various activities and/or on vacation along with the dogs. Granted it's slowing down, showing its scars and slowly being relieved of responsibilities. These days, the only off-pavement driving many Suburbans see is parking on the grass strips next to a soccer field.

yep - thats going on with most SUVs now, a few months ago I was requested to help take out a blocked in parked vehicle. which was a Toy Land Cruiser btw.

The entire driver side and rear of the truck was near a grass strip while it was blocked in from the front and side, The little suburban mommy had no idea that it can be used off the tarmac too (btw her keychain weighed 3 lbs I think)

HOW CAN ONE OWN SUCH A VEHICLE and not know that it can climb the 4 inch paver or even 1 foot paver.
