A blow to the Milk Mafia. Hooray!
I've been doing essentially the same thing for years. Fortunately this is not a big dairy state and there are no milk police as long as you are careful.

My favorite paragraph of the article!
'Meanwhile, many vegetarians and radical animal rights activists are anti-milk, arguing that drinking any form of it is both unhealthy and cruel to cows. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals once went so far as to urge college students to drink beer instead. (As if they needed any encouragement to do that.)" The All-American breakfast. Wheaties and beer!

How can he be charge for producing milk without a license? The cows produce the milk. The farmer 'harvests' the milk from the cow.

He was running a member club or cowshare or something similar. You pay an upfront fee for a share in a particular animal's production over a set time period, or for a share in total production for a set time period. Only 200 people in his club so not a huge amount of milk produced. That the Wisconsin dairy monopoly was willing to pursue the guy is evidence that factory food producers are genuinely concerned about small scale local production. Good.

This happened a couple of years ago in Venice Beach, next door from the coffee shop where I would get my coffee in the mornings.

Publicity is a good thing. With awareness of what's going on, I can't see public opinion going against small scale local production.

A health food store owner once told me that small growers are now required to pay $50K for the right to call their food "organic". He said the net effect was putting the small growers out of business because they could not afford the $50K. Does anyone know if this is true or not?

Getting organic certification is very expensive and time consuming. In my experience, lots of buyers don't really care if a product is labeled with the certificate or not. The small producers aren't selling to large grocery chains in any event, organic or not. That certificate on a label is important to shoppers who are buying commercial groceries in large stores. You shouldn't be able to label a product organic if it's not. Buying from CSAs (community supported agriculture coops) or farmer's markets you get to know the producer face to face and learn about his practices. Don't need no label.
