Exclamation Word of caution!

Who dusted this old thread off anyway?

Whatever, this is as good a time as any to inject a word of caution regarding skin cancer, especially facial skin cancers.
Three weeks ago tomorrow I had a malignant melanoma removed from my left cheek. For years I've had a light colored skin discoloration about half the size of your little pinky fingernail. This past Feb, a small dark spot the size of a pin head appeared. In May it started to spread and lift from the surface. Saw a dermatologist in July, had a biopsy and one thing led to another and surgery on 9/1.
What started out as a spot the size of a pin head ended up leaving a scar in its wake that took about 37-40 stitches curving around my cheek. The scar's healing nicely & will eventually fade.
Stage 1-B melanoma. The protocol is to cut 2 centimeters around the area and deep enough to get it all. My surgeon told md he cut an area about the size of a .$50 cent piece through the skin. Closing the wound is the tricky part and the reason for the long scar.

I've had Mohs Surgery for Basal cell & this is much more involved...and much more serious.

Anyone who works or is active (i.e. sailing) outdoors in the sun, take heed, use sun block and pay attention to your facial changes. Don't assume skin discoloration is just old age spots.

My face now has had 75 stitches in the chin (45 from a 60's car wreck and 25 from a 2009 MC accident), another 25 from the upper lip Mohs surgery and now these. Hope these fade away as nicely as the first 100 did.

Call me Scarface...for the time being
