Some days are better than others

My youngest son's gifted testing result came back. The school district, IMHO, does all it can to not test students who are advanced- it means if they are then they are required to give them challenging courses. It costs more and that takes away money from other programs. Of course lawsuits (not from me however) have forced the school to test anyways. My son was finally tested after 4 years and scored a 99.69% for intellectual capacity in his age group. His reading comprehension level is 12.2; meaning he reads as the average 12th grader. His other scores were very elevated. He's in fourth grade. We took him out to dinner and ice cream.
My middle son was accused of "beating" on his roommate during a off campus multi-day school trip. The boy is 20 pound heavier than my son and has 7 years of martial arts training- my son has zero training. School district police "interviewed" my son, the boy, and the other roommate. Both my son and the other boy were cleared of all accusations, and the principal wrote a letter stating so.

Life is good today.

Although the school district I attended (District 66 in Omaha, NE) when not attending private schooling was and is at the top of the heap - your chances of getting scr#wed around in the Gov't run school systems ANYWHERE for ANY reason is somewhat greater than the private school system, by in large.

I was fortunate to have folks that recognized these differences many decades ago, and took measures to send myself as well as all my Brothers to private schooling through Grade 12 and beyond for the mostpart.

Too many horror stories of human-engineering out there in Gov't-run schools. Sad.

They got the cops involved over something like that? This country would be better off if we fired 50% of the cops without pension.

Overpolicing is one of the things that's very wrong with the US.

I'll go ya one better, personally, I think we'd all be far better off in this country with 50% less cops, AND no pensions for any of 'em. (Throw-in fire depts. here too!) Let them work like the rest of us poor schmucks in the private sector figuring out how to take care of ourselves in retirement. -Without all the free Gov't giveaways they're getting, without having to pay out-of-pocket $20,000.00 a year insurance premiums to Obamacare.

When a 22 yr. beat cop retires in Omaha, NE - he gets $48K a year with CostOfLivingAdjustments for life, AND $50.00 a month free healthcare for life. That is SO #$&*%^#* wrong!

Back to the OP. Congratulations William on your kids successes! There is nothing as much fun as your kids doing well. It makes you feel better than your own successes. Its even better with the grandkids!

Thanks Tom, it made my day to hear Patrick "passed" the exam. He was glad to be able to tell his brother ( who was evaluated when he was in kindergarten as gifted) he was smart too...
Now they both have a IEP (individual educational plan; the same type of attention and care to fulfill their IEP must be made for all of the "inclusive" students who also have a IEP due to being "gifted" in a different sort of way) and thus a much better chance to succeed in school and life IMHO.

I was in the gifted program when I was in school. At the elementary level, it's great...lot's of individualized learning, tailored to the student. Once at the HS level, it's less selective, mixing gifted with standard education. It works for some...it didn't work for me. I learned more by going to the local college library with my older brother than I did through the HS.

My son qualified for the gifted program in Ohio...yet his mother refused to put him in it. I moved him here, and the district puts teachers with tenure that don't want to be there in charge of the program...which is why my son dropped advanced math this school year. He'll be in it again at the HS level next year.

Congrats to your kids for being so damned smart! I wish you and your kids the best of luck in the program!!

Congratulations on your son's success and test results!

If you had the money, my advice would be to move him to a private school where they will help him to achieve his potential.

In the past, we celebrated kid's achievements, but now they are a nuisance to bureaucrats.

Take care of your kid and forget the school system.

Look for foundations that will give you money to help educate your kid.

My son is gifted and now he's in college.

I had the money previously to send him to the best private school in the area. But he only had to pay for 50% because they gave him a 50% academic scholarship.

Please, for your son, do some digging and leave the school system behind, they have lost sight of their mission, in my opinion.

I was in the 'gifted program' until grade seven. My folks moved so of course I moved with them.

While in the program I never noticed any difference in the schooling. All of my classmates were also considered gifted, so everyone just seemed normal.

After I moved the teachers at the new school did not know what to make of me. Some would go out of their way to show that I was not so smart, and one of them really became enraged when I told her that in twenty years I would be the one calling the shots in the school district and she might want to consider that. (Actually, as an adult, I worked with some guys to get them elected to the school board. Out of the five members of the Board three of them were elected due to my help and backing.)

High School was not much better. My Counselor suggested I drop out of school since I didn't seem to be learning much. I sent him an invitation to my graduation from University and heard from another Teacher there that he still hated me. (It's good to know you have made a difference in someone's life.)

When I was placed in a job at BIG oil it was like going back to the fifth grade. Everything was rather easy and all of my co-workers were far above average in the smarts. The fact that we got to play with real money was also nice since it really is a great way to keep score.

But being 'gifted' is not all fun and games, and when I speak to gifted kids todays I warn them take the world in stride since at least 98% of the people out there are dumber then they are.

Congrats to you and your son! Hopefully you can get him set up with a plan to help him to achieve his full potential.
