I remember campaigns against war toys in the 80s. Nothing new to see here.

This being said, my parents were pretty uncomfortable with the things, having spent the first few years of their lives in a literal war zone -- tanks and guns were the things three year olds' nightmares were made of, and they escaped from a pretty militaristic society and didn't want that for their kids.

Maybe they should lock kids up in a plastic bubble and limit their information so that they don't get desensitized to all the ills of the world. I know I used to play with toy soldiers and all kinds of other crap. Didn't make me want to be a soldier. Hell, I don't even want to own military style guns. Oh well, always a sucker out there for the psychobabble.

"Hill believes that children who play with toy guns may not think real guns are dangerous. “Playing with toy guns, saying ‘I’m going to shoot you,’ desensitizes them, so as they get older, it’s easier for them to use a real gun,” he claims."

Honestly; My eyes rolled so far back into my head...they almost stuck.
California has a population of like 40 million; of course some of them are going to be wacky.

of course once we take away all these pesky cap guns and plastic light up guns that kids chase each other around with, they will go home to their gaming console and play "Gears of War" or equiv. where they can enjoy the photo realistic pleasure of tearing someone apart with a chainsaw in an explosion of blood and gore.

We should take away the toy guns, but we should also mandate that all school children eat 50 servings of over processed fatty and sugary snacks so that when they snap and want to act out their private fantasies of murder, they are simply too fat to be dangerous to the general population.

What is mixed in california water anyway?

kids of my generation watched wile e coyote do crazy stuff to catch the road runner or popeye kick bluto or tom do crazy stuff to jerry.

I dont recall it even having any warnings of not trying it at home, still we understood the facts of danger....

Honestly they should test the drinking water supply for some special drugs in it. Not even marulas can get an elephant in Kalahari this stoned.

Yeah. I think this is news because it is the exception and not the rule.

This sort of thing has been tried before, but if you did not know this and understand that it really had no basis in fact you might think you had come up with something new.

But I am not the one to ask. I grew up with guns and when my children were small we lived way out in the country so they did, too. None of them became crazed killers because they were taught that guns are tools and not toys. But before they could learn this they had to play with some that were for a few years so they would get to know the difference.

(By the way.... One of my Sons is a Actor, and he thinks one of the coolest parts of the job is getting to play with automatic weapons. He got his first film role because he knew enough about guns that they did not have to budget any money to spend time teaching him how they work. His gun collection consist of zero guns because he thinks of them as tools and not toys.)

While I'm never one to miss an opportunity to blame Californians for almost anything wrong anywhere anytime (Texas too), this is ONE school and if you stop and think about it most kids have lots of toy guns if they have any at all. Take your least favorite and trade it in on a book and a shot at winning a raffle. Sweet deal.
Sure the principal's a doofus. Most bosses are.

Make all the snarky asides you want, but just remember that Lee Harvey Oswald played with toy guns as a kid.

And he turned into a poor dupe for the CIA and La Cosa Nostra. Even toy gun play couldn't defend him against that fate

A nationwide toy trade in program should be developed. Is the NRA up for it?
No one gets into 7th grade without passing yearly basic gun safety courses and live firing exercises.
