Yes the prior post basically sums up a lot of factors. To feel alone does create some concerns though for any individual. Religion may fill that gap for some real or otherwise.

I have never had an issue with people believing whatever they do. Within reason of course. This hard sell to increase ranks is problematic though in the organized religion framework.

Being composed of threats or blackmail essentially. We all probably believe in something. To me the sheer power of nature is very impressive. Or the fact we can even exist.

From solid evidence the odds against these two things to be present are staggering. Mans concept of time caters to his own situation. In the grand scheme of things it matters very little. Mans total existence on this planet will just be a flash in the pan I suspect.

Then there are rational beliefs. You for example can believe in the tooth fairy. As there are gay dentists around.

I am agnostic but admire the teaching of Jesus and try to live by them. Don't tell my mom please.;)

I also attempt to live in a reasonable way. I think it makes life easier in some ways. I do not know if I can attribute it to the writings in the bible though.


It just seems natural not to want to do many things. I believe I know right from wrong and have a conscience. Part of these things may be by genetic inheritance. I do agree you could also call it the Christian viewpoint.

Our sense of morality, right & wrong, etc. evolved in tandem with our big brains and highly social behavior. We are far more successful creatures when we work together within a framework of common interests and good. Here we are, dominating a planet after a mere instant of geological time. It took other creatures tens of millions of years to similarly dominate their environment. You can't argue with success! Luck too; had that asteroid missed by a hair, it's anyone's guess what the natural world might look like today.

Various religions have done a decent job (with notable exceptions..) of codifying morality - credit where due. But so did philosophers, poets, songwriters, etc.
