Dutch scientists invent pavement that eats smog.

From the LA times: "To clean the air, Dutch scientists invent pavement that eats smog". First they invented pavement that absorbes rain; what makes for a save and dry freeway even during the hardest rain storm, then they came with heated pavement to prevent highways to become an ice skating ring during the winter months and now roads will clean the air.

Sounds great but I doubt that asphalt lobbyists would let it fly over here.....

That's the problem here, lobbyists holding back progress. But it would only make sense in urban settings, plenty of regular pavement left in this country.

The first step would be for people in our country at admit that there is potentially a problem with the air pollution we generate.... step two would be funding a solution....
So... never happen here.

What country do you live in?
Here in the USA we have been admitting that there is a problem with car-generated air pollution, and actually installing devices to limit it since the 1960s. We even coined a term--"smog".
Today's cars emit a tiny fraction of the pollution that cars of the early 1960s did.
I'd say that we have covered step one pretty thoroughly.
As for step two---how much more taxation can we stand? I live in MD, this is a one party state. In this case its a democrat-run state, but from what I gather from other forum posters--one party republican states are no better. But here in MD as an example--we imposed a gas tax decades ago to fund repairs to roads and bridges--highway stuff--paid for by those who used the highways thru the gas tax. Made some sense.
Then the gas tax fund got to be large, and legislators eyed that money, so they recast it as a "transportation fund" tax, and used it for things other than roads and bridges--things like public transit subsidies ( becasue public transit can never pay its own way), and airport improvements, and subways and rail transport. These projects used up all that surplus, so the legislators came back whining that the gas tax wasn't producing enough revenue to take care of the needed repairs of roads and bridges--and they were becoming unsafe. It was a crisis! They raised the gas tax, as well as vehicle registration fees, and added a sales tax on gasoline.
Yes, funding is the problem, Marylanders are not giving enough income to the State. 1/3 of our millionaires left the State when the legislators imposed a special tax on millionaires.
