Decorated, wounded Marine treated 'shamefully' by security screeners | Military Times | militarytimes.com

TSA is a joke

Over blown hype.

How many troops have been killed by impostors wearing the uniforms of "security" forces?

A wounded soldier deserves respect, not reverence. The wearing of a uniform doesn't get you a free pass through life. It gets you one from me but not from rules.

Possibly it's a problem with rules, however I prefer employees charged with security to follow rules rather then have them exercise personal discretion.

Apparently, the United States Marine Corps trusted this man to do his job which he did and was injured in the process. He did his job so well that he received military metals and accommodations. Apparently, the USMC didn't and doesn't view him as a "threat" to national security and entrusted him with the armaments of war to carry out its' mission.

In contrast, TSA doesn't trust ANYONE, that is why they search EVERYONE, even military men in uniform. TSA has its' government mandated rulebook and nobody is going to get in the way of 'government procedure', not even a decorated Marine Veteran.

I can't help but wonder if the security guards searching him ever served in the Armed Services of the United States.........because if they had, they most likely would have shook his hand and expressed their gratitude for his service instead of trying to FEEL HIM UP.

x2. The guy was there with his friend, and the beef seems to have been over removing his uniform jacket which he just should have done with help if he needed it.

Everyone else removes their jacket and runs it through the scanner. This is a totally predictable requirement for getting through TSA, especially if your jacket has a lot of metal and other items that will certainly set off the walk through scanner, like obviously a uniform jacket will. His friend could have easily helped him remove his jacket to get through security, instead he wouldn't take it off and they decided to argue about it.

Handicapped people go through security every day, there are allowances and methods to handle people who might not be able go through regular security.

A terrorist can go out and buy a uniform tomorrow at hundreds of locations. Here are numerous marine uniforms for sale on ebay. Wearing a uniform should get you no special treatment when passing through security screening, or any outfit for that matter, because for every legitimate Marine, TSA must assume that some someone with an agenda could simply be wearing the uniform. Thousands of uniformed armed forces personnel go through TSA daily, and submit to the requirements out of common sense.

so whats your problem with this policy? (red)

wouldn't be much of a security process if TSA personnel could make judgement calls like you seem to think should be policy.

If you recall the Marine corps trusted Lee Harvey Oswald as well, before he then defected to the USSR, and subsequently shot Kennedy.

Everyone should be subject to the exact same security requirements, regardless of who they are.

okay......

so the parameters of security screening should change per person and per personal ideology?

If I go to TSA and yell loud enough that I shouldn't go through screening because of my military service, they should just let me through? what if Im carrying a gun or explosives? Why should I be trusted because of my uniform any more than anyone should be trusted by anything they happen to be wearing?

Dubyagee 07-09-2013 04:18 PM

The whole system is distorted. Letting anyone in the country using visas and loopholes, employing drop outs and idiots in the TSA and harassing with no rhyme or reason. Complete stupidity. All reactive, nothing proactive.

Follow Israel's lead on airport security not this halfa$$ed facade.

All of this 'discussion' brings to memory a story a friend who is involved in the airline business shared a few years post 9/11. Though not the exact set of circumstances as the present discussion, I think it is pertinent.

Seems a Captain for a major airline was being detained by a wet-behind-the-ears Generation X twenty something TSA gate agent assigned to check his luggage for 'contraband'. After an exhausting long and agonizing search, the twenty something TSA agent seized some 'dangerous' finger nail clippers. The Flight Captain then lets go with the following:

"Son, if I wanted to cause some real destruction, I'd wait until we were in the air and grab the fire axe in the cockpit and tear the hell out the controls and crash the plane myself. Right this minute, I'm supposed to be on board the aircraft running through pre-flight procedures. Your detainment of me is negatively impacting the SAFETY of my aircraft, my crew and the passengers. NOW GIVE ME BACK MY GD LUGGAGE BECAUSE I AM BOARDING THE PLANE RIGHT NOW!! SEE 'YA!!!!"

Sounds like a lot of airline pilots I had to deal with. Way to full of them selves.
