Ex-Vegas prosecutor found dead after drug sentence
By HANNAH DREIER Associated Press LAS VEGAS — A former prosecutor-turned-fugitive who handled the high-profile drug cases of Paris Hilton and Bruno Mars was found dead Wednesday in his Las Vegas home, his lawyer said. David Schubert, 49, had completed a five-month stint in prison for crack cocaine possession in April. He was found sitting in his truck in his home's garage with the windows rolled down, according to his lawyer and friend Lou Schneier. The Clark County coroner's office declined to comment. Schubert spent 10 years as a Clark County prosecutor, including a stint as a liaison to a federal drug task force. He resigned in 2011 after he was arrested with $40 in rock cocaine and an unregistered handgun in his car. He fled to Mexico to avoid jail but returned to the U.S. He told a judge he felt he had been treated exceptionally harshly. He expected mandatory probation and a chance to wipe the felony conviction from his record. But the judge refused to consider a plea deal, calling Schubert "a disgrace to his oath as a prosecutor and a lawyer" and declaring that he wouldn't get special treatment. Schubert told the Las *************** in a jailhouse interview that he felt singled out. from: http://seattletimes.com/html/nationworld/2021413562_apusprosecutordrugcharge.html Dunno if others here watched the series named “The Practice” but in that series one of the recurring themes was that those who work in the criminal justice system are always damaged by it. The series is worth the time investment, IMO. In this example, that’s certainly true. Of course here, the duplicity of the person absolutely stinks and more than hints at another emotionally weak and terminally insecure person who worked for the state, as if that’s unique or a surprise. |

In "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" (1971) Hunter S. Thompson described a hilarious drug and booze addled run to Las Vegas frfom LA in a rented Chevy Caprice convertible;
And on the outskirts of I-15 outside of Vegas he described a billboard he saw: Don't GAMBLE with MARIJUANA Possession - 20 years Sale - Life Las Vegas - possibly the World's mecca for sex, alcohol, gambling, and nicotine; Bunch of hypocrites if you ask me. Been there a number of times passing through on the way to and from Tucson, or with SF visitors/wife that insisted on going there. I think it sux though, as a destination - though I enjoyed the SEMA show about a year and a half ago there at its convention center.

I used to hear that the downfall of many drug dealers was doing the drug they dealt. A prosecutor doing the drug they prosecuted is just a new angle on the same story. A local prosecutor became a judge after rehab but his daddy helped. Helped a lot.
No rest for the wicked. |
