Organ donor question
I am taking a defensive driving class on line (moving violation) and they had a section on organ donation. According to the video they said that even though you may have signed a organ donor card, if your family does not agree to it you are SOL. I had never heard of this before but I would think that if they put this stuff in a state certified class that the info would be correct. Does anyone know anything about this?
The video suggested that if you want to donate, make sure your family knows of your intent and is on board with it. I guess a notarized letter might not be a bad idea.

I've made it very clear that my organs... stay inside of me.

I seriously doubt anybody'd want any of my parts. Maybe at a deep discount. OT though I think your class is right. Family can keep you intact against your wishes if they want to and there's not much you can do about it from the other side.

Between beer, cigs, and bacon, I don't think I'll be leaving behind any parts that anyone wants.

Wow, that's news to me. I always figured a little check in the box on the license and you're good to go.

I've been signed up as a donor for decades and I knew of this issue. My wife knows I want them to cut me up and pass me around, just like John Prine sings here...
John Prine - Please Don't Bury Me (ORIGINAL ALBUM VERSION) - YouTube She, on the other hand, has not committed to recycle her mortal remains. I told her not to worry. If I outlive her, I'll make that decision.

Prior to my health issues, I agreed to have my organs donated to whoever wanted them...the body is just a vessel, and you don't need it on the other side. Since my health issues started, my doc and I decided that what I have isn't worth much to anyone. However, if a discount kidney shop opens up, and they need my parts, my wife can sell them to the highest bidder. I'm not even sure a notarized piece of paper will cause the harvest to begin...especially if your spouse says no, and she's the only one with access to it's location. By the time the battle is over, your body will be liquid or ash.

Yeah, my family knows to parcel me out if there's anything useful left. Just make sure you fill me back up with whoopie cushions for the funeral :p

My oldest sister had a living will and organ donor card when she had a massive stroke at age 54. We honored her wishes and 6 people were given their lives back (Heart, Lungs, Kidneys and Liver) 2 regained sight and many burn vistims were given a fighting chance thanks to the skin grafts that were made available.
I have had the privilige to meet several of the people who recieved the donated organs and have found that my sister lives on in others. 8 children have been born thanks to her gifts. 2 are named for her. My Dad passed last year at 96 and wanted to donate his body/organs/bones to the program and he was really pissed that they said"Sorry we don't have use for 96 year old parts"... |

Jeez, you put up with this crap? It's easier to just pay a neighbor's high-school kid $25 to take the class for you.

I have been a donor for over 20 years on my drivers license but am old enough now I wonder if they'd want anything if I got killed. I'm in pretty good health but only a person my age or older could probably benefit.

Just for discussion's sake, what do y'all think of the Chinese organ harvesting program where they supposedly harvest executed prisoner organs?
