Everything seems so over simplified. Of the Black Men In Prison the Majority just have to be there simply because of present day Racism.
Now it may be that Black People are on the poorer end of the scale because of Past Racism kept them from getting a head. But, My View of most present Day White People is that they want Black People to successful in legitimate Jobs. That is different from the Past where White People wanted Black People barred from and decent Job. But, a large number of Poor Folks; especially in Cities tend to either sell illegal substances or commit Crimes to get Money. They see that as a more secure future than the normal get a Job routine. Sadly the main Victims are their own People or People in neighboring areas who are also Poor. After going to Jail once does can Person really learn a lesson and not have to go back to a life of Crime again? I can't answer that one because both are beyond My experience. But, at some point a Person has to take responsibility for changing themselves or learn to live with what happens to You for not doing that.

Here's Professor Stuntz on statistics suggesting that violent crime is underpunished in black communities while drug crime is overpunished:

Professor Stuntz was brilliant, honest, and a-political. He had a knack for coming up with angles on issues that most people miss. |

Quote:
There is no logical reason for the sentence disparity. Whether in crack or powder form, it's still cocaine. But about 4 in 5 federal crack offenders are black. Asa Hutchinson, who was head of the Drug Enforcement Administration under President George W. Bush, righteously testified that the "disparate racial impact" of the cocaine-powder disparity undermines "the integrity of our judicial system." Crack and powder should not be black and white - SFGate

Statistically black people are far less likely to use or sell drugs, but stand a far better chance of going to prison because of them.
And for a longer time than their equal-crime white contemporaries.
