Tony Bennett gets his
In the last election our State School Superintendant, Tony Bennett, got beat decisively by a relatively unknown Democrat, who had about 10% what he had In his campaign chest, in the midst of a flood of Republican victories .
Bennett was the poster boy for Republican style Education reform. Along with the R governor Daniels he had pushed through a host of revolutionary "reforms" including, vouchers for kids to attend private schools with public funding, including religious schools, gutted the teachers union's ability to represent teachers, instituted a great many ways to reduce the pay to teachers based on various tests, and instituted an A through F grading system for schools with the ultimate result being a takeover by the state of any local school not performing up to his standards. It was perceived by Indiana voters that all this had gone too far, hence they voted in the new Democrat School Super. Our R governor proceeded to ignore the voters wishes and has done everything to thwart any of the new Super's initiatives. Bennett went off to Florida to be hired to do the same in Florida he had done here. About a week ago an AP reporter uncovered and publicized communications which show that Bennett changed the scoring methods which are used to give the grades so that a private Charter school owned by a buddy of his could be graded A instead of C which is what the students earned. As a result Bennett has resigned from his $450,000 a year job in Florida. Based on what I am seeing it appears that he committed at least fraud. My wife took early retirement at the end of last year because of all the onerous things happening in Education so she is enjoying (me too) Tony Bennett getting his.

How does one get a diploma from IA HS via a "waiver" from meeting state reading & math minimum standards. (10th grade standards at that)?
More importantly, where does one go with that ticket? [Indianapolis Public Schools] Superintendent Eugene White defended his district’s use of waivers — though more vigorously at first. Waivers, White said, are a legal avenue to a diploma under state law, and students who qualify have every right to use them. “Nobody has more issues and challenges than our kids,” he said. “It’s a way to get more of them to graduate. They have met all the requirements and earned the credits to graduate.” However, in a second interview with The Star, White acknowledged that IPS’ state-leading 26.7 percent of seniors districtwide using waivers to graduate last year was “unacceptable.” Waivers allow a quarter of IPS to graduate without passing tests | Get On The Bus Missing from the data released Monday was the “non-waiver graduation rate,” which culls out the number of waivers that high schools grant to graduating students who fail to pass the state’s required end-of-course assessment tests in math and English. Statewide, about 8 percent of students in 2011 received diplomas through the waiver process, but in some schools the percentage was much higher. - See more at: High school grad rate continues upward » Local News » Pharos-Tribune I'm not picking on Indiana. It's probably average in grad. rates & "Pass Thru's" What was Mr. Bennett's position on "waivers"? Lemme venture a guess? It was opposite of those in the education business in your state? |

I have seen this sort of thing in the past. Someone get into power, bends the rules a little, then bends them a lot and then bends them when it brings in a tidy profit.
They lose sight of the fact that others are watching and think they can bluster their way out of any problem with the help of the Governor. When G. W. Bush was Governor of Texas there was a bit of this going on and those involved in it figured George was a good 'ol boy and would always play along. Their problem was when George found out about it he let them know they has figured wrong, but it was still not too late for them to retire and just go away. After about three or four of these this sort of thing really died down. After all, if you don't have a get out of jail free card then you don't want to be risking jail. |

whatever happened to just teaching kids, giving them grades based on what they were taught and graduating the ones who passed? why does a state need more educators than it does teachers? why can't johhny read?

As far as high school education, why don't states give people a free ride in language, history, math, or hard science majors if they agree to teach HS say five years out of the ten after graduation? Could even be part-time.
The problem is that a lot of people with "edumacation" "degrees" don't know the first thing about the subjects they're teaching. I was lucky in HS because we had quite a few ex-Bell Labs engineers and grad students in the subject that they were teaching in the teacher pool. |
