I think with what MsFowler is saying, speed cameras are fair. Go over, you get a ticket in the mail. It isn't arbitrary as with a cop who might give you a ticket for 5 over because he had a fight with the wife or might scold you and let you go for 10 over because he had a menage e trios this morning.

Honestly, I'd have no problem with speed cameras if:
(a) limits were set at a reasonable speed for the road
(b) 10 mph leeway were given for inaccuracies in equipment and passing
(c) cameras only recorded cars seen speeding and were not used for wholesale surveillance

I don't know if the Merritt is a good example even of a 1930s expressway -- it was built for beauty rather than continuous high speed. Probably a better example of 1930s construction is the PA Turnpike that was opened in 1939-40 and was actually built for high speed (originally, it had no speed limit). Many of the rural parts are in fact good for 80 mph.

Perry is an arse, but a lot of infrastructure is built by foreign firms. A lot of foreign infrastructure is built by US firms. Globalization. As long as the road was well built, then it being built by a Spanish firm bothers me not at all.

Most infra is not owned by a private outfit and --we have to pay AGAIN to use. We already pay for the roads.

If it were built and owned by a good 'ol American outfit using all unionized labor, they'd probably still be shoveling. America has come to suck at building and maintaining infrastructure in the last 30 years.

Tickets are to profitable, they will never raise speed limits.

In reality most people do 80 on the highway.

Rural speed limit in AZ is 75, and they took the freeway speed cameras down a few years ago. I've done 85 on the I-8 between Gila-Bend and Yuma and was being passed by people going 10+ mph faster.

The Spanish outfit does this in several parts of the world. But they are the reason the speed limit is 85 on this section of road. Perry and others fought this higher limit until the company told them 'No 85, no road', since the company knew it could build such a road and it still be safe.

So the 85 mph speed limit did not come from the Texas DPS; it came from the owners of the road as a condition of it being built.

BUT..... Having driven that section of road for over 50 years I can attest to it becoming more and more packed. I can remember sailing down I-35 from Dallas to Austin in just three hours and then Austin to San An'tone in about one more hour after I cleared Austin. Traffic was always packed up in Austin.

Then traffic got packed up between Austin and SA and then traffic got packed up between Dallas and Austin and now it seems like a 200 mile trip from Dallas to Austin is like driving a freeway in the city.

And crossing Austin to go south will take about an hour or more. And that is on the Interstate.

So the bypass around Austin to SA makes sense if you are a trucker or anyone else for which time is money. I think it cost about $15 or more, but it will save you at least two hours of time.

Yes, but most people don't travel at those speeds. Not around here.

I do not understand the rational about a grace speed above the posted limit. If the limit is set at 60 then do 60. If a grace is standardized at +5 then everyone will do 65 and that is the speed limit so post it at 65.

I personally have no issue with cops being given discretion about who they stop. Of all the tickets I have received in 30 years of driving (may be 10 or so) I deserved everyone of them. I was speeding. End of story. I have never been stopped for doing 3 or 4 over the limit. Are there examples ... I am sure there are a few but I am also sure they are the exception rather than the rule.

Cops need the leeway in my opinion to account for driving conditions and other issues. No system is perfect but I dont see an issue with the one in place.
