iPhone vs dumb phone

This week, I was accidentally deprived of my iPhone, so I've been using a "dumb" phone that I bought for my cousin who was visiting from Austria a few months ago. (Alcatel 510a).

The thing is actually a hell of a lot more suited to be a phone than the old iPhone.
(1) Reception is better indoors, and sound is actually better.
(2) It's super light, maybe 1/3 the weight of the iPhone, and 50% of the size
(3) Battery life is measured in days rather than half a day to a day at most. Charging is very quick.
(4) "Boot" takes 5-10 seconds as most, vs about 30 sec to a minute for the iPhone
(5) Response of the screen is instantaneous, no slight lag or occasional freezing like the iPhone.

I think I'm going for either this dumb phone with voice only + a 7" tablet with data only as an iPhone replacement, or going with a Blackberry + a tablet. There is something to be said for more focused devices rather than the iPhone which tries to do everything well and (still) isn't great at it.

Basically, one phone and data (mainly email) consumption device and one full-on interactive device.

My $.02, but I've noticed that dumb phones have a louder handset than most (if not all) smartphones.

Not a question of volume -- iPhone would cut out in many areas where the Alcatel phone works just fine. And this went for my previous iPhone as well.

There is something to be said for specialized devices and minimalist/limited operating systems.

I can't remember being annoyed when I had my "dumb phone", now with my android I seem to be in constant battle with the device. Maybe a "dumb phone" and a 7" tablet is not a bad idea.

I never saw anything wrong with smoke signals, personally.

I miss my old Nokia candybar phone. It always had signal, never dropped a call, had a great speakerphone, and the battery lasted for days.

But it also didn't have any data service...

...except that someone else might overhear your conversation on a windy day. I hated that. The people who have an urge to talk on the phone at restaraunts were much more irritating back then, too.

That's what we still have (the Nokia 6030, to be exact). My mother's is eight years old and is still puttering along just fine -- we have never had to make one single repair on it, and we've dropped it numerous times.

Many have commented that the iPhone is not a particularly good phone. It is a good tool otherwise. I mostly use it with the speaker phone, when I use it as a phone.

Given a choice I’d use the ipad with a voice line and ditch the iphone. The iPhone is too small for most man hands to be able to type or even work with the user interface. Plus, as mentioned, the battery life is dismal. At the time I got the iphone, getting an ipad with a voice line this was not an option.

The Alcatel actually has a tiny keyboard, but since it's tactile with real buttons, it works fine even with my large hands.

No thanks to Apple and their locked-down app ecosystem. Stallman was exactly right in his "obit" of Jobs -- "inventor of computing as a prison."

I'll either go for an Android tablet, a Windows 8 (not RT garbazhe, the real thing) touch-screen "tablet PC", or hold out for a fully-working Ubuntu tablet.

By "tablet," what I want is more of a touch-screen laptop with SSD, capable of running a desktop OS (not gimped trash like iOS and Windows RT). Android is halfway between the two extremes, but it's OK because it's very hackable and configurable.
