Roller painting a car with Rustoleum

I don't know how or why I ended up reading a bunch of how to's about hand painting a car with Rustoleum, but it's pretty interesting and some folks are getting amazing results.

Anyone ever done it?

The only home car painting job I've ever taken part in involved a retired 79 Dodge Forest Service truck, a case of white off brand spray paint, half a day and several 12 packs of beer.

I know a guy that's rolled a number of cars. He did it years ago. I'm sure techniques have improved. They weren't too bad but it was definitely noticeable that it wasn't sprayed.

My Grandfather hand painted a Fiat way back when I was a kid. It looked like it was sprayed. I don't know if he buffed it or any other details. He was not your average hack.

Let me google that for you

to do it properly will involve hours of painting, wetsanding, and polishing. But the end result is a very durable and long lasting paint job.

Thanks, but I found the how-to's on la google. I like the cheap part best. Never saw the upside of putting a 2K dollar paint job on a 500 dollar car.

I painted this old thing - '59 cornbiner - back in '72 with an airless sprayer. About half a day sanding, priming, and masking, a half a day spraying. It was work but it turned out all right. Odd color, I'll admit. Earth tones were big at the time.

Might ought to do that with my old Bimmer.

I guess masking the back windows would have taken too long??

I rolled a boat with poly urethane one time, paint had levelers in it, looked like it was shot with a gun.

I shot Rustoleum on a refrigerator and it turned out real nice.

I'm just guessing he was a better painter than seamster.

From what I've read the skill is in the polishing - it seems like a good way to learn how to use a polishing machine. The problem I have with this method is the lack of clear coat. I don't think it will be so nice and shiny...

Windows?! Them there were steel panels. It wasn't a full-on Travelall, it was the panel truck version of same. Originally a Sears service van. Had "Sears" painted over on the side along with "We Service What We Sell" which was not. Had to sand all that off - you could see "Sears" under the paint.

Oh man, I had the hair, huh?

This guy used foam blocks and paper. Super shiny. I don't know why you couldn't add clear coat.

My "rustoleum $50 roll-on paint job"

I think that is factory metal in those openings. IHC made delivery vehicles like that.
