Senseless

"They were younger than him, just teenagers who were driving around, apparently bored and looking for somebody to kill, according to police in Duncan, Oklahoma.

The indiscriminate shooting of Christopher Lane, a 23-year-old Australian who was living his dream of studying in the U.S. on a baseball scholarship"

Unreal. Duncan is a fairly small, sleepy little town....I can't imagine why these asshats would think to do something like this......hope they fry

We should ban those .22 caliber assault pistols. Those things are pure evil

Those are some seriously warped teenagers. That said, my legal/moralistic/PC responses to pj67coll are:

Legal response: IMHO the death penalty as administered in the US should be held to violate the equal protection and due process clauses. Those clauses haven't been and probably won't be construed that way, but they should be. The only way we will eliminate state sponsored unnecessary killing will be at the ballot box.

Moralistic response: Thou shalt not kill, and "thou" includes the government.

PC response: I don't really have one of those.

spdrun 08-21-2013 10:55 AM

No chance of execution, since it's Federally prohibited if the criminal is under 18.

Death penalty has nothing to do with either due process of equal protection. It's merely one outcome after ep and dp are handled.

Screw that. That's a nonsense holdover from the dawn of a warped and schizophrenic cult. Some people need killing and these three little ****s are perfect examples thereof.

You may not. But I'd be surprised if others in society don't chip in with them pretty soon.

Right you are. The Supreme Court had a moment of clarity on that one.

But our system, as currently constructed, is not equipped to handle EP or DP in the manner that the death penalty should demand. We aren't up to doing it right, so we shouldn't do it at all.

It is above my pay grade to be able to respond in any meaningful way, but it seems to me that the thing that makes these people so vile is that they took a human life. So outraged are we by that act that we need to, what, take their lives? Morally, it makes no sense to my pea brain.

I might be fine with the death penalty if:
(a) it was required to happen within a month of conviction
(b) no creepy perversion of "medical" procedures, just a firing squad in the jail yard. it's killing, and shouldn't be veiled in a cloak of medical legitimacy.
(c) the judge, jury, and prosecutor were required to watch
(d) anyone who perjured themselves or subverted process leading to a wrongful execution would be subject to mandatory execution themselves

Basically, make it as unpalatable for all involved as possible, and see if Americans still have the stomach for it.

Of all the death row prisoners that were lucky enough to be exonerated, at one point in the legal process, a prosecutor said the same thing as you, to a judge or jury.

Bradley Manning just got 35 years. Care to wager how long the 15 year old here gets? My hunch is he'll see his 35th b'day out of jail.
Course, I likely won't be around to collect or pay off.;):D:rolleyes:
