Not banned, but you need a permit to purchase (though interestingly, not to own) in NJ and to own in NYC. The rest of NY state is much less strict though.

depends on what you call a hunting weapon. i know plenty of people that hunt with an ar-15.

I know a guy who hunts with his AR-15 variant. With pistol grip and bayonet lug. I used to squirrel hunt with a pistol before my eye got bad. Sometimes I'd even kill one.
