the mother doesn't remember putting him in the car, and they estimate that he was there for 10-11 hours!

I keep better track of a housecat than this woman appears to have cared for her child. I will be interested to see who put the child in the car, and who was supposed to be watching him.

What a horrible story

If this is proven true, the "mother" needs to be forcibly sterilized.

First, put her in the van and let her experience what her child went through. If she survives, then sterilize.

Just over 30 children this year, so far, have died in the US from being left in overheated vehicles.

Good grief.

That statistic amazes me.

How could anyone in this day and age NOT have heard about these dangers?

Crap, I grew up in Phoenix and we didn't even leave the dog in the car more than about five minutes, and that was with windows cracked.

That poor kid. Hopefully he didn't suffer.

The mother in this case could well be doing heroin. Strange what the stuff will do.

Apparently, Jan Null at SFU keeps track

So far in 2013 there have been at least thirty-four deaths of children in vehicles; twenty-four which has been confirmed as heatstroke and ten which, based upon the known circumstances, are most likely heatstroke (2013 list). Last year there were at least thirty-three deaths of children (see 2012 list) due to hyperthermia (heatstroke) after being left in or having gained access to hot cars, trucks, vans and SUV's. Since 1998 there have been at least 595 documented cases of heatstroke deaths of children in vehicles. This study shows that these incidents can occur on days with relatively mild (i.e., ~ 70 degrees F) temperatures and that vehicles can reach life-threatening temperatures very rapidly.

I am fairly certain substance abuse was involved. Which one(s) I don't know. This of course does not relieve the mother of criminal responsibility.
