Iowa grants gun permits to the blind

Gun permits for the blind

I've got nothing. Kind of speaks for it's self.

When they were applying for their permit, were their Iowa driver's licenses accepted as adequate proof of ID?

A Shot in the Dark.

All we need is for Iowa to hire an "Inspector Jacques Clouseau", and we can set the stage.

Not to mention the trial possibilities are endless.

There are special sights that convert visual information to audio cues that allow blind people to participate in target shooting. Having a blind person carry for self defense is something I would question, but I'm not ruling out the possibility that there is some way to make that work.

"Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while" kind of thing, maybe...

On the face of it it does sound stupid- but the right to bear arms is just that- a right.

Would you be on the same side of prohibiting a blind deaf person from voting?

Why do we need a permit to exercise a right in the first place? Do we need a permit to vote?

On the face of it, it does sound stupid, but if you delve more deeply into the issue, it does sound stupid.

You know, I can just hazily discern a difference between filling out a ballot, and emptying a Sig Sauer in the general direction of a sound that I just heard.

In many states, you do, in the form of state-issued personal identification.

you really don't understand much about blind people......more than a few have developed hyper sensitive auditory skills which allows them to pinpoint with extreme accuracy where a sound is emanating from, similar to a bat's sonar abilities. So, if a would be mugger shouts, "give me your wallet or else!!!!", a blind individual with these skills could easily dispatch a mugger in a hail of lead. And all without dialing 911 and waiting for help to arrive.

If someone were to break into their house at night under cover of darkness, they don't need to grab a flashlight or turn on the lights to waste their ass. They can literally 'aim in the dark'.

I'm not saying all blind people are at this level but some are........

..and the applicant's degree of this sonar-like ability was evaluated prior to issuing the permit? What if you are blind and don't have this ability; do you still get the permit?

BTW, if you are a sighted person and something goes bump in the night, do you recommend shooting first, then turning the lights on later?

therein lies part of the problem, doesn't it? What skill level is required before issuing the permit? And, what if their skills decline over time? You have to remember, neither you nor I are involved in the permit issuing process. That job is left to a government employee and everyone knows their vetting skills are the best.

I've been asking these same questions concerning 'licensed drivers' for years. I see eighty year old drivers who can't see past their own windshield out on the roads every day. They need to call a taxi or a limo service instead of driving while blind. Instead, you best be on the lookout for vision impaired granny driving a Buick headed straight for you!!!

And Granny's right to aim her Le Sabre down the road is enabled by a permit called a driver's license. Makes sense that if she can still qualify for a permit to drive, shouldn't a blind person who qualifies for a gun permit be also qualified to hold a driver's license?

two different skill sets, thus two different permits (licenses).

Why not? In "Blues Brothers," Ray Charles did a pretty good job whistling a few rounds just past the kid that was stealing the guitar.
