Boulder CO

Any members in the Boulder area?

Pretty bad stuff out there right now.
Has all but washed my little mountain town off the map....
I live in CT these days, but spent many years out that way, and still have property there... or at least I did a couple days ago.

To any of us out there... hang tough, stay high and dry and best of luck.

I've never seen rain like this in Colorado. 4 days non-stop more or less. Most of it is has been about 40 miles NW of us. The Big Thompson river which normally runs about 50-100 cfs this time of year was running at 5000cfs. Boulder Creek was at 3000cfs yesterday.

I'm always amazed how destructive water is. The neighborhood I grew up in was protected by walls 6 foot thick and 8 foot high against the nearby river.

Hope your friends and property are ok.

Lost a very good friend right at the beginning of the event....
20' wall of mud, rocks, trees and water went right through his house.
Quite a few others are probably homeless, won't know until it's safe to walk back into town.
Currently all roads in and out are washed away, and most people are holed up in the elementary school.
The town is cut in half by the creek, and both bridges are gone.
Will likely be weeks before they get power back.
They began airlifting people out today...

My property is up fairly high on the end of a ridge line, so aside from some erosion and probably no more road to it, the dirt should still be right where I left it...

Sorry to hear about your friend, CMB. Was that Jamestown?

I lived in Colorado for several years and my heart is breaking for those communities. (I was living in FoCo in the late 90s when torrential rains swept away a mobile home park and left some of them in a greatly-swollen Spring Creek and did such horrible damage, and this just looks so much worse.

Thoughts and prayers are with all of those affected by the rains and flooding. Just awful.

9/12/2013 Colorados Big Thompson Canyon Extreme Flash Flooding - YouTube

The video is mis=titled. This is not flash flooding, it is sustained flooding. More rain predicted in the same area for tonight and tomorrow. I have a friend with lives in Arvada. Normal yearly rainfall is 19". He's gotten 14" in the last 4 days.

The frequency of so-called 100 year storms has become pretty spooky. We had a 100 year storm a few years back which dumped 16” of rainwater in about 24 hours in the area. It mostly re-routed 2 larger rivers, took out the roadways along the rivers in places over about 20 miles, eroded the foundation of a dam enough to take it out of service, and essentially re-designed many neighborhoods up to 40 miles downstream.

We’ve had 2 more similar storms since then.

yep... or as we call it, Jimtown.
Was always Jimtown until the feds put in a post office, and they assumed that it was supposed to be Jamestown...

Still haven't seen much in the way of pictures from town, just a few scattered reports from people who still have sporadic phone service or internet.

Trying to come up with a way to get out of work for a week or so to head out and help clean up and restore the infrastructure, but we have a lot of shows coming in, and I will likely be needed at work.

We are in Estes Park, CO and mostly cut-off from the rest of the world. We are aware of the severe damage to The Big Thompson Canyon, Glen Haven, Drake, Lyons, Boulder and on and on.

Right now, our only way in or out is Hwy 7 to Central City or over Trail Ridge Road which could be closed at any time at 14,000 ft.

We are very concerned for the folks downriver that I mentioned above. Total devastation for miles.

Many more photos here:

Photos: Colorado floods devastate Boulder, Lyons, Longmont, Front Range communities

The amount of destruction for a relatively small geographical area is astonishing. It's probably something like an area of 50 x 50 miles where the storm stayed centered, pouring down on to very steep terrain. If the storm had occurred 50 miles to the east, it would have come down on pretty flat land where the damage would have been minimal. But the way the canyons concentrated that water into narrow river beds wrought havoc.

Thanks for the link Kerry, I hadn't seen some of those images.
Seems like almost every house on the creek side of the road is gone, and at least 1 on the other side where the mudslide came through.

The clean up has started, and they expect to have a passable connection by land in the next day or so. Not up from Boulder, but down from the peak to peak highway.
