Louisiana Colloquialism

When I was at work the other day I was helping an older couple (mid to late 70's I think) and I asked their B-day. The woman was first and she said "3rd, 21, 19xx (third, twenty one nineteen what ever). Took my brain a few seconds to get this to translate into Mar 21, 19xx. I thought it was odd. Got to the husband next and he responded the same way. 2nd, 4, 19xx (second, four nineteen whatever).

At that point I asked what was up with the date. Had never heard it said that way before and I thought it was kind of cool. They said they were both born in LA and lived there for most of their lives.

Anyone ever hear this before or hear other different things like this?

Undoubtedly some archaic usage that has been passed down through cousin-marriage in the backwaters and swamps.
Or something.

No, they'd say 21st March 1949, not put the numerical month first.

What's odd is the March 21st is my birthday.

People from Louisiana know how to formulate sentences? When did that happen? Next thing they’ll be putting together sentences to make paragraphs, and then expressing opinions. Then they'll learn about shoes! We can’t have that! (joking)

LA was way ahead of Obama, with a network of charity hospitals supported by the taxpayer. Huey Long was a socialist before socialism was cool.
