Outlaw Quadrupeds

In my state there is a type of critter designated "outlaw quadruped" (http://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/hunting/outlaw-quadrupeds). You can take them at night using NV and sound suppression.

So, having never used a night vision scope nor a silencer, I got curious.

It turns out that you can get a BATF license for a suppressor (!COOL!) but then your name goes into the government database, which of course the gov would never abuse..... So no sound suppressor for me. BUT, NV scopes are not registered items. So I bought one ATN Aries MK390 Paladin Night Vision Rifle Scopes 14361 Free S&H ATN MK-390 NVWSM39010 last year. It's gen 1+ (grainy, short-range without IR illumination).

And mounted it on a new Remington 597 .22 WMR (http://www.remington.com/en/products/firearms/rimfire/model-597/model-597-heavy-barrel.aspx). At night I couldn't get it under a 3" group at 50 yds and often a stray would be over 6" from the group. All pretty consistent to the lower right.

The 597 trigger pull was awful. Maybe 6-7 lbs and had a fair amount of creep. So I bought a drop-in solution from Volquartsen, a 'target hammer' Volquartsen 597 Target Hammer. It makes a huge difference. I haven't measured the trigger pull but it's got to be under 3 lbs and very crisp---almost no movement then blam!

I have one more problem (which I why I am posting this on OD), the danged scope is so tall and heavy that it tends to rotate to scope-under. This is awkward. I'm thinking about a bipod but am not anxious to shoot from prone, at night, in a Louisiana swamp. Too many critters looking to express their territoriality. I prefer seated on a log.

Y'all have any suggestions?

So use NV and no silencer, you get one shot and make it a good one.

Wait for the sun to come up.

Pour a liberal amount of gas on the critter.

Light critter.

Run like hell.

Be sure the door hits you on the @55 when you hit the doorway...and the flaming critter is still outside.

Seriously...

A mono-pod would work. adjust for the height, aim and GL with the critter-gitter ala-NV...

I have thought about the shooting sticks thing (TMAllison's post) and have once or twice used that method when squirrel hunting with my 10/.22 (30 years ago...). I was hoping for something a bit more ... elegant?

As long as you're not shooting at inlaw bipeds, it's all good.

Someone sells an adapter that allows you to screw an oil filter on the end of your barrel to help you clean your gun or something. I hear it works quite well. Or didn't hear it or something.

Cool, that's the right track.

Concerning NV, knowing what I do now I think I should have bought binocular NV goggles. Would an Eotech work with NV goggles? The Eotech really impressed me for the shorter ranges. The NV scope is too limited in FOV.

It's not a license, it's a tax.

Using an untaxed can carries a 10yr /$10K federal spanking. Not worth it. The tax stamp is a one time deal per can and the ATFE won't come knocking. It does take about 6 months these days to get approved.
