Oh my... my mother is at the ER again...

This spring, my mother went from feeling as normal as she does, (she has a lot of health problems -- numerous joint issues, a recent year-long battle with Lyme disease), to feeling so dizzy that she could not stand. They went into the doctor and she was diagnosed with an inner-ear problem, put on some medication, and seemed to improve. Several weeks later, as a follow-up, they did an MRI on her head and found that she a benign tumor in her brain that had caused a blood clot. To the ER we went, and she was in the hospital for three days, after which she was released and put on Cumadin.

She had surgery in July and was in the hospital for five days -- in a LOT of pain, enough that she couldn't hide it (which is a lot -- she is very tough about pain, which she is in all the time anyway). She is off the blood thinners and has been recovering slowly but surely, but last week she noticed that what's left of the scab on her head was oozing a little bit of liquid. She went in to see her doctor's NP, and she said that it should be okay, but to let her know if it gets worse. Long story short, it did. She went to see the NP again today, and was told that it does not look so good now... she is currently at the MGH ER waiting for a CAT scan. If it is an infection, (which the NP seems to think it is), then treatment could range anywhere from going on a PICC line for antibiotics -- she did that when she had Lyme, and it wrecked her digestive system -- to having surgery again to clean the Titanium plate they have in her head (they couldn't put the piece of skull they took out back in because the mass had grown into it).

The NP said that it will probably not be until 8 PM that they are all done with the scan. I guess we will hear more around then... until then it's wait, pray, and work. ...I'm exhausted.

Good luck to you and your mom. Many of us have been there. It's what kids do for their parents. How old is she?

I can sympathize. Best of luck, and don't forget to take at least the minimally accepted level of care of yourself - you won't do your mom any good if you keel over.

Thanks guys. She is going to have surgery to clean the area -- it is infected, but it isn't deep, so the surgery will only take a couple hours. They're scheduling her for surgery in the next couple of hours. Thank God for the Boston hospitals we live only 40 minutes from -- world-class care at our doorstep.

She's middle-aged -- probably younger than you . She's had joint problems since the age of 30, severe ones, and since 2007 has been a crazy time, with both of her parents dying, her having shoulder surgery, me being in a car accident, her brother being found dead in his apartment at the age of 60, her dealing with Lyme disease and four other tick-borne illnesses, plus all this.

She is a tough woman. I hope I can be like that someday (except for the woman part )
