Are dielectric grease and caliper grease the same thing?
Are dialectric grease and caliper grease the same thing?
I wondered about this and ran some searches. I saw an ad for a product that claimed to be both. I used caliper grease in place of dialectric grease and it seems to work the same. It looks the same. For some things I was using grease for seals on scuba equipment until I ran out of it. I use silicone grease (super lube) and diaelectric grease on the boat and they seem to be the same. IDK about caliper grease.

I used the caliper grease on low voltage connections (12V). If impurities caused problems I think it would more likely show up in high voltage connections like secondary ignition applications. I am speculating.

I would suspect caliper grease would be formulated to deal with high temps found in a breaking system, but if the dielectric grease met these temp requirements I don't see why it could not be interchanged.

I bought a can of dielectric grease to use on battery terminals. I used it for the first time last week. Doesn't seem much different than the vaseline I previously used. I imagine there's one big factory putting out the same stuff and labeling it dielectric, caliper, silicone or KY jelly.

I see great marketing potential.
Cures baldness, aids weight loss, kills roaches, etc |

Silicone 'grease' is available in high temp grades. It would be noted on the tube what temp the particular grease is made for.

Links to a product that is described as both dielectric and caliper grease so it can be done. Don't know if this would apply across the board with silicone grease in general. Quote:

Dielectric is usually silicone based, and is formulated to be nonconductive and stay gooey at moderate temps. Caliper^same as above, but higher heat range. Silicone-^same as last two, varies by grade. KY-water based, will wash off or dry out easily.

Good info. My son who is an auto tech and I have been debating this for years. I have been using dielectric grease for many decades on almost every connection I make that is outdoors, marine, or automotive. My son always argues that it hinders the conductivity of the connection.
This info should clarify the subject! |
