By Pete Sweeney
SHANGHAI (Reuters) - China landed an unmanned spacecraft on the moon on Saturday, state media reported, in the first such "soft-landing" since 1976, joining the United States and the former Soviet Union in managing to accomplish such a feat. article: Chinese unmanned spacecraft lands on moon |

And people always rant about how Chinese products are junk. They are getting much better. Look where the Japanese started in the 1960's. The Chinese need to develop name brands, with quality reputations. Perhaps some will fall-out from their moon program, as they did in the U.S. When I was in engineering grad school 30 years ago, there were ~2 U.S. citizens out of 100 Phd students. That hasn't changed. Don't imagine we still have the capabilities of the past. We lost most of our heavy metal industries long ago. The next war may show us to be a paper tiger. We are #1 in making over-valued websites though, plus our innovative movies like Rocky 7.

Chinese make junk because the American people demand the cheapest possible price. They are very capable of producing fine merchandise, and precise equipment. Only problem is that no American will be willing to buy it when they can buy the "same" thing at Walmart cheaper.
A lot of people need to wake up on many different levels.

Over time I have been finding that all Chinese manufacturing is not junk. In fact some things I buy there are the world standard at present. For some items they pretty well are the only manufacturer of them as well for all practical purposes. You might still buy them with an American label but they are made in China.
For the average consumer the large and small flat screen televisions plus almost all computer components are of Chinese origin. I think it is wishful thinking that the Chinese will always produce low cost inferior merchandise. Some brands of their general appliances are getting good word of mouth in comparison to some so called north American labels as well. At some point expect the Chinese manufacturing sector to become the second Japan. Certainly with their dollar where it is they will produce junk as well until that is changed. I cannot see where retailers like wallmart will eventually source things that enable their tremendous profit margins they currently have. Recently for example I priced wallmarts Chinese snow tires. Wallmart buys them for almost nothing I suspect but does not pass any real savings along. Currently you can buy north American produced snow tires for about the same dollar. Wallmart are now not counting on their customer base taking the effort to price check I suspect. Or at least this seems so in Canada. Actually their volume of sales have been tapering off and their pricing policies may be a good part of the reason. Currently if you want a Honda with the least problems you buy the one made in China. I think it is prudent to keep an eye on where China is going. They have to have a plan as their economy is set up to double in size over the next seven years. We North Americans will be more than lucky just to maintain the status quo I suspect during that time frame. Last edited by barry12345; 12-16-2013 at 07:07 PM. |

Manufacturing ALWAYS follows cheap labor. Then as a country or region becomes industrialized, the workers demand more pay until another cheap pool of labor is found. USA was where "junk" was made in the 1700's--the quality was from Europe.
Then the USA became the quality manufacturing company, until it priced itself too high, and the jobs went to Japan. Now China is the cheap labor supplier. What is next? Africa Lamenting doesn't change anything. Of course we could just pay 2X or 3X the world price to give our own people jobs-but could be afford to buy enough at the higher prices to make a difference?

It doesn't matter how long it takes, our current politicians find it much more important to spend our borrowed money for buying votes for themselves, than stimulating invention as a byproduct of such noble ventures.

And the bigger pictures is being missed. This is not about manufacturing crappy appliances for millions of ignorant westerners. This is about a paradigm shifting technological lead the US held over the rest of the world which thru sheer ignorance and stupidity has been allowed to disappear on our watch. - Peter.
