Detroit Folks . . . Can You Confirm?
Corned Beef, Rye And Why Detroit Jewish Delis Might Just Be The Best Around | Food Republic
Carnegie Deli was the first Jewish deli I hit and the only thing I took away from that gargantuan corned beef on rye is that size, at least in the case of sandwiches, does not always matter. I've done Carnegie, Katz', 2nd Avenue (old and new), Stage (now gone) in NY. Katz' in Austin, Canter's and Langer's in Los Angeles, Akins and Milton's in San Diego, but never been to the Motor City. I went to school in A-Squared and ate at the original Zingermans on a regular basis - it was across the street from the tech startup I worked at part time. It is without a doubt the real deal. Better than NY? Hard to say, but it sure holds its own. Since then it has gone from corner deli to something of an empire - I got their mail order catalog this season.

I love Canter's in LA on Fairfax down from Melrose.
Never miss the chance to go there when I am in Los Angeles. Which is fairly often. It's been around since 1931.

Canters was a bit of a disappointment . . . they don't have lox, they only have smoked salmon. Yes, there is a difference.

And by Detroit, he means mostly the northern suburbs, not the city. IDK, one can get good rye bread and sammiches in NYC, but the tourist traps aren't where one should look

Philly has the best IMHO.
The best Reuben I have every gotten was in Philly. In the Northeast we are spoiled we have the best food and lots of it!

Where in the City of Brotherly Love did you sample that grilled marriage of pastrami, russian dressing, swiss and 'kraut?

"goyim" is plural. BTW, Kenny and Ziggy's in Houston, Tx gets a lot of raves.

Mmmmm...
Rein's Deli is a favorite of the Mrs. and I. Being only 15 minutes away is an advantage over the car/train ride into NYC. I tend to agree with the writer regarding the rye bread. While Rein's doesn't pile the meat as high as the famous "As Seen on TV!" ones, the pastrami and corned beef is every bit as good and the rye bread is better. I'd have to think of another really good reason to go to Detroit, and if I do, I'll be sure to visit as many of them on the list as I can!

My first experience with jewish deli's was Weis's in downtown INdy. I was astonished at how great their food was.

There was a Katz's in Phoenix for decades, but it's now closed. I don't know what's replaced it that isn't buIIshlt.

Last time I was there, on 7th St, the place was selling pizza. I do like the Karsh's bakery further north on 7th.
