New wheel bearing making clicking noise when turning by hand?

I have a Timken bearing that I bought for the Corolla; when turning it by hand, I hear a clicking noise. My intuition says it shouldn't. What do you think?

The one I'm replacing is actually quite smooth when turned by hand but his thing does one click per revolution.

Oh, sorry, I just realized I was unclear. The bearing + hub come as an assembly, and when I spin it in my hand (just holding it in my hand, not installed or anything), it makes a clicking noise.

It's a FWD car with a solid rear axle, and when it started making noise in the rear on left turns and then howling in the left rear on the highway, I decided that it was time to replace the left rear wheel bearing.

Nope.

This is it (or one like it).

Red face Confession time

I have already installed it .

The humming noise from the rear persists, though slightly differently .

I guess I will be taking it out .

Nothing about that would cause me to install it. Timken or no, it's bad. Send it back.

At least I have broken up all the rust in there, so removal should be easier than last time.

Loose bearings with no grease in them do make a nice clicking sound

the bold would indicate a right rear wheel bearing instead. On a left turn, the right side of the car is loaded, and a right side wheel bearing would be the one increasing in noise, while the left side is unloaded, so a bad left wheel bearing should actually be quieter making a left.

I misspoke -- loud in the left when turning right.

Those bearings are greased for life from the factory. They should be quiet and smooth if turned by hand. Best test really is with an old CV joint stub inserted, nut installed and tightened down properly. Since there is generally one outer race and two inner races, you have to have the two inner races pulled together properly to really judge them in proper alingment. When I worked on front whell drive VWs, I used to have an old CV joint on the bench for just that purpose. (probably still have it running around somewhere in my pile of "special" tools.)

@Bob: No CV joints here -- the hub base just bolts onto the rear axle.

the bearing is duff - you need to return it and get a replacement, I ran into a similar problem with a chev impala in my house, The timken hubs lasted a grand total of 1 month - unbolted them and got genuine AC Delco replacements. rolls smooth now.

You should only be looking at genuine toyota parts for such critical parts.
