Anyone ever compete in a...

Tractor pull?

Some friends talked me into registering and running in a tractor pull....

This is new territory for me - I've been road racing, drag racing, and drifting, but have yet to compete in a tractor pull...

It's a month away, and I'm looking forward to it.

Anyone have advice? My strategy so far is "go for broke in 4 wheel drive"!

I'm sorry if you've posted it before, but you have so many vehicles, and change them up so often, I'm going to have to ask, do you have a pulling tractor? Or any tractor for that matter?

I've heard of spectacular engine/drivetrain explosions -- sure you want to put your Duramax up to the block?

Sounds like a potentially expensive hobby.

The closest I got to a tractor pull was when I used our farm tractor, an International Harvester 686, to pull a fire engine out of a ditch in the snow. That fire engine was HEAVY. The chain was long enough to get me on a spot of cleared gravel road where I could get traction. The driver and I got the fire engine rocking a little bit and then I opened the throttle. My front wheels were way up off the ground, but it pulled on out. It was sweet. High fives all around.

I think it's all about getting the momentum working your way and then putting the fuel to the fire.

In West Virginia, not far from here, they do tractor pulls, but they also do slow tractor races. It's done on a straight track, like a dirt drag strip. Last one to the finish line wins. The only rule is that once you take off, you can't stop. These guys rig up these gigantic rear ends with ridiculous gear ratios. The guy who was telling me about it was bragging that he won a big slow tractor race. He said, "The other guy blew by me like I was standing still."

I've also seen some pretty spectacular failures, but 98% of them were built running 1.5x stock boost... In terms of drivetrain, my rig is stock...

There's an antique tractor pull in an historical park near our house once a year. It's fun.
