Does Your Burg Have an MLK Street?

MLK Jr. Streets Struggling in Urban Settings

Nearly three decades into the observance of Monday’s federal holiday, the continuing decline of the most visible symbols of King’s work has White and others calling for a renewed commitment to the more than 900 streets nationwide named in the Atlanta native’s honor. The effort centers in St. Louis, where the small nonprofit is working to reclaim MLK roadways as a source of pride and inspiration, not disappointment about a dream derailed.

In Phoenix, there's a Martin Luther King Circle, which is a cul-de-sac.

Apparently, 125th St is also named MLK Blvd, but I've never heard it referred to as such.

Arizona has a "funny" historical relationship to the holiday.

Not in Lafayette or West Lafayette that I know of. There is of course one in Indianapolis as there is in most large cities.

The MLK Blvd in Chapel Hill is the former NC86/Airport Rd. that stretches from downtown, north through local businesses and neighborhoods. No decay there.

The one in Durham is one of the newest stretches of roadway running through high end neighborhoods and commercial areas. Nothing to be ashamed of there either.

In Carson City we have a King St., but it predates Dr. King and is named for King's Canyon, where the road terminates. I don't know which King the Canyon got named for, but it was probably an early rancher or settler.

In the cities I know--the MLK Blvd is always a slum in the worst part of town. How much of an honor is that?

No burg here. Roads tend to be named after whoever settled them first. Mine is easy for me to remember.

I have never lived in a town that didn't have one.

You must not spend much time uptown with the brothers...

I'm sure we have one, but Chris Rock told me to avoid it at all cost.
