At my place of work, when we first had to have passwords on our old mainframe system, a lot of the people had the corp name and some form of profanity. They were always embarrassed to tell me when I came to fix their machine. Then I let them know they were not the only ones with a password like that. A lot of people are very creative now. Of course most of them write for a living.
I like it when a company (bank, health ins, etc) suddenly comes up and wants me to change my password or security questions. Usually that's a strong hint they have been hacked and are keeping it under wraps. Bad day for the CSR in the prison in Bangladesh (where they outsourced to) as I make their ear melt.

You may be a good engineer, but I predict you'd make a very bad social engineer .

Well, theres ... and then ,,,
and then theres this one and that one and a bunch of other ones ...

Actually. I just counted them all. Between work and home counting the various online forums and accounts, banking, work systems etc I have no less than 25 separate passwords I have to manage and remember. Happily I'm able to consolidate some of them down to the same password, and groups of passwords. But I'm not about to tell the world my secret.

Suffice to say it's nothing most folks would dream of thinking about.

But it is a bit crazy how many I have. And these are not occasional ones. Most of them are used on at least a weekly basis with some being used daily.

Modern life sure is crazy at times. Oh and by the way that's without any presence at all on any social media site like facebook, twitter etc...

I want to know what common systems do not enforce 'complex' passwords anymore (other than the old industrial systems I get to use

Let's say that they exist and are sadly more common than you'd think.

One of the companies that provides services to my employer - a large, global, multi-billion dollars revenue per year company - sets up customer login accounts with the default password reset.

I tried, on 5 separate occasions, to go through their website's password reset routine - each and every time, regardless of what I'd change my password to (and regardless of the email I'd receive saying my password had been reset): the password would remain reset.

So I asked my contacts at the company. I asked my colleagues at my employer. The response was always the same: "yeah, it always does that. My password is the same."

Sigh. So much for data protection.

Sigh. So much for data protection.
Banks for the most part do not care if your data or your accounts are breached. Most people are not millionaires and it's more expensive, in their view, to install protection software.

You have to do certain things yourself. Like make good passwords which are actually easy to remember but hard to duplicate because the dictionary programs used to crack passwords assume you will only use letters.

A simple example of a complex password

Benz#1isa300Dandcostme$1200

Using a dictionary program working at 4GB per second, which is pretty fast,
the average hacker would need roughly

2 with 60 zeroes in front of it in seconds to decode.

1.7 x 10 to the 51st power YEARS

with an AI program cutting that in half, you would still be pretty safe until the next big bang.

Change the program by putting something ina foreign language (like Pin Yin) and the AI program would have an abend and crash (sorry )

Or, you can just use " password" because it's easier and lose everything quickly.

Your choice
