Circling back to MB...

Have an opportunity to pick up a 1980 300D with 365000 miles for next to nothing... Runs and drives fine, and starts up without issues in high teens weather. Would I be a nut to pick this thing up and just drive it into the ground?

At 365K, the ground is probably just a few inches away.

You'd be a nut not to get it.

You'd be a nut if you spent anything more than the absolute minimum on the car to keep it running and safe.

It's going to need a timing chain, injector nozzles, and vacuum pump at the absolute minimum. Probably will need engine/trans mounts too.

I doubt you have it in you to drive one of those into the ground. Certainly not the attention span.

You could get that car, turn a wrench here and there, and sell it again in a year. Likely at a profit. Or just keep driving it. Or leave it (along with a pile of money) with Doktor Bert and be amazed at the car he can make out of it.

I'd go with the last one.

I tend to agree with the idea that a na 617 will about run forever if given decent care.

No. Not at all. Sounds like a no-lose, whether you keep it for a month or 20 years.

x2, who are we kidding here?

you will be bored with it the second its in front of your house. Hell, ill bet you are bored with it right now, just thinking about it.

Id direct other 123 fanatics over to the deal, and continue car hopping in the 6 figure range

Found it needs a freeze plug.

Thinking of listing it up in the classified here.

Freeze plug? Holy cow! Might as well total it.

My 300D was nice, but when it came up for a valve adjustment, my only realistic choice was to scrap it. Sad but true.

I think they're just a big pain to replace (at least on the turbo motor). The plugs themselves should be dirt cheap.

I wouldn't want to do the job.
