My 300e oil leak - fixed
When my 89 300E with 66K miles that I bought on eBay arrived it was perfect...except for a major oil leak in the engine front. My general mechanic said he wouldn't have bought it because he didn't know how much it would cost to get it fixed. After reading forums I guessed it was the timing chain cover seal , however I'm not mechanically inclined, don't want to start leraning but don't want to pay through the nose for repairs either. A good friend turned me on to a friend of his who's a German-trained mechanic, works for a limo company full time but does personal stuff on the side for $25 an hour.
Right away, he found it was a loose bolt! I had him spend the rest of the hour adjusting the idle which was a little rough, replaced a carb hose and because he didn't have change and I was a buck shy, it cost me all of $24. Good stuff happens! (And I've found a great mechanic for everything but the computer type stuff). My neighbor on commenting on my "new" car said "Well I guess if you've got it, flaunt it". I just laughed inside and didn't tell him I paid just over 7 grand which is a third of what he paid for his new Chrysler! (And I probably have more miles left on it than when his car was new! Gary |

those 124's with the M103 engine are great cars and yours with only 66k miles on it is a steal! read the threads in the performance alley on how to get more horsepower free (if you are so inclined).
congrats and good luck with it!

My 300E has over 260K on the clock and has the same oil leak. I am not going to repair it just yet. Anyway, some out of town friends rode with me in it this weekend and they could not believe how good the car rides!! We were on the highway and just flowed with traffic at 80/85 mph with no problem.
Good luck with your "new" car. Take good care of it and you will find yourself driving this car for a long time. Another fun thing about a MB is that you can get hooked on how many miles you can brag, and always looking forward to recieve the next high mileage badge and certificate.

Joe; extra kick interests me but I live in Phoenix where we're about to have 5 months over 100 degrees and constant air.. Higher operating temp seems to be the only drawback. Your thoughts?

I must say I am delighted with my car and I do 85 on the freeway without realizing it, I'm going to have to watch out for speeding tickets. Low gears are a little slow but then I didn't expect sports performance. From what I read, I really wanted the straight 6 engine. My wife drives a Q45, which I like to drive as well, but I figured 1 v8 in the family was enough. I usually buy used cars and drive them 5 to 8 years and this is my first Mercedes so who knows how long I'll go with it.
