Space oddity: Mystery of the moving Mars rock
 

Scientists are trying to work out how a rock mysteriously appeared in images taken two weeks apart by Nasa’s Mars rover, Opportunity.

In my scientific opinion, they should command the rover to poke it with a stick.

It's part of a meteor that landed elsewhere and broke up, and that's where this piece finally fell to rest.

Then the rover leg thing happened. ;)

That is a bit odd. MY guess is if it is actually a rock and not something that fell off the Rover then it's a meteorite fragment.

I second that motion, and while they're in the vicinity keep an eye out for similar looking pieces. Though if it is part of a shattered meteor, could be the pieces will be widely spaced.

The article states that NASA scientists believe it’s something that fell off the rover’s tracks, but I prefer to conjecture that “they” (whoever “they” are,) are messing with us.
