Marlboro Men

Can't Catch a Break, or Their Breath

Eric Lawson, who died of COPD on Jan. 10, was one of many models and actors who portrayed the rugged "Marlboro Man" over the course of the ad campaign.

I do not wish harm upon anyone and I might be a bad person for saying this but .... I think its funny as hell that a cigarette advertiser dies of COPD. That right there is irony at it best.

I'm always amazed that people still smoke cigarettes on a regular basis. We've only known about the health effects for...what now...a half-century or so? My paternal grandmother died from emphysema in her early 60's so smoking wasn't even on my radar in my formative years.

Sure, I've got my unhealthy vices and some of them are habit forming, but cigs just seem like a whole 'nother level.

Heard yesterday that smoking hookah is actually worse for health effects than cigarettes. The water does not filter and requires extra effort to draw the smoke, so the inhale is deeper. A spokesperson said that a typical hookah session could be equivalent to a hundred cigarettes.

I'll just stick to my quarterly cigar.

I know eating Twinkies is bad for my health. Doesn't mean I want to stop eating it. Knowing is different from doing. Take what you said. You know you have unhealthy vices. Are you willing to quit them all? What sort of life would you lead? Sure, it is long and what not but life becomes more uncomfortable. Key is moderation.

"Moderation" is a somewhat imaginary concept when the item being consumed is highly physically addictive to the general public.

I haven't been addicted yet to cigarettes although I smoke once in a while. OTOH, I was addicted to Coke, the soda. I would say that depending on the person, you can smoke a few one day and be fine. OTOH, if you smoke daily, well......

Respiratory illness accounts for a large portion of health care dollars. Without cigarettes, large parts of the health care system would collapse leaving all of us without access to health care services. We need lung cancer and we need it BAD.

I would bet that the overall percentage of "occasional smokers" among all those who smoke is pretty low. There are individuals who for one reason or another never become addicted to nicotine, but they are said to be very few.

Let me guess. One of your "friends" who cannot be named, right?

I'm one of those people -- I can and have smoked half a pack a day for a few days (stressed, partying), then didn't smoke for weeks or months afterwards. Any withdrawal symptoms I had were very short-term (splitting headache the morning after), but I never got the shakes or the level of craving that some people do.
