My brother's $1800 computer build
My brother really wanted to get a new computer as his old 2005 XP machine died so he decided to go full out. He researched and researched and researched then saved enough money to build this computer, a super fast machine, probably saved about $500 total through sales and such. My dad has been building computers for years and we helped him when we were little.
Here is a parts/specs list: -Intel i7-4820K 3.7GHz Quad Core processor- -Corsair H100i 77.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler- -Gigabyte GA-X79-UP4 ATX LGA2011 Motherboard- -G.Skill Ripjaws Z Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory- -Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5" Solid State Disk- -EVGA GeForce GTX 780 3GB Video Card- -EVGA SuperNOVA 1000G2 1000W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply- This is all in a NZXT Switch 810 ATX Full Tower Case which is absolutely huge. The operating system is 8.1 Pro, he also plans to install Linux at some point. He bought a nice gaming headset. He still need a better mouse, keyboard and monitor. This is much nicer than my 2007 or so Dell system, it shipped with Vista business (which I never had crash surprisingly) but now has 8.1 Pro as well. A slide show the build is here: Thomas Computer Build Slideshow by oldskoolfan2 | Photobucket It's power can now be tested by Myst and DOOM

Love the wire management.
Did you regrease the GPU and bridges? He's going to love that EVO 840. I put one in my Brother's netbook and it doubled the responsiveness.

He didn't get a picture of what the wires looks like after he rearranged them, it looks like a lot less of a mess. I'm not sure what you mean by regrease the GPU and bridges, but he probably will. I'll ask him if he did.

Oh no, I like the wiring! Nice and clean. It drives me nuts when someone builds a machine and just spaghettis it together. The stock GPU thermal compound is usually really cheap and crappy-same for the bridges. It's easiest to replace with arctic silver or ICD when the board is new, since it hasn't cooked on yet. $10 on arctic silver usually drops your temps at least 5°

I told him he should but he said it was more effort than it is worth I never have been able to sign up for the EPC, much less load it

Oh you've gotta. It's like building a race engine and then slapping an OEM radiator on the front. What, he can't just run some calcs to "mine" enough dogecoins to pay for the computer itself?

The floppy diskettes were a nice touch.

I knew a few of our seasoned forum members would like that. I found them in my dad's computer service briefcase.
I actually used floppy discs in school quite regularly until I was in the 2nd grade and we bought 128mb flash drives. All the cool kids had flash drives. Of course floppy discs were considered to be the future at one point as well (they even used memory stored on cartridges in the original Star Trek series), my dad tells me of working with computers when he was a professor. One of the ones he used was the same model that NASA used for calculations and flight control for the Apollo missions. He showed me some of the programs he had to make, all of course on punched tape. Fascinating to see how far we have come, especially when a simple, handheld, scientific calculator has more processing power than the computer used in Apollo 11.
