AZ has copper for it's historical plates. Coated sadly with some kind of junk so they don't oxidize unlike the original AZ copper plates, but still pretty cool. I had them on the 240D and the boy has them on his Land Cruiser. Cost 25 bucks extra, yearly.

ETA: Shlt, they're now copper colored steel. Oh well, still pretty cool, I have both types and they're hard to tell apart.

These "new" 1963-1969 style black plates are NOT the original black plates. Nor will the yellow 1956-1962 or the 1970-1986 ones.

They are going to be reflectorized and won't be authentic or need to be alphanumerically correct for the model year of the car. Purists and collectors hate this.

That's why the program is not an easy sell, though the added fees are not helping either.


This is my 1967 Cougar with the ORIGINAL 47 y.o. plates on it. I kept them when I bought the car, that had been in storage from 1988-2011 as a barn find survivor, complete with the original selling dealer's license plate frames on the car.

The DMV required me to first present them with ORIGINAL documents tying the VIN# to the original license plates PLUS a physical exam of the actual plates to be sure they were not damaged, rusted or bent out of shape. They were like new and miraculously the original DMV registration cards from 1968 and 1969 with the license number VOA202 came with the car, so my application to keep them and reinstate the license number back into the system was approved.

The cost was FREE!

I was able to retain them and give back the white new plates they gave me (totally inappropriate for this kind of car) so now it's as it was exactly the same in 1967 except for the 2014 blue year sticker on it.)

In North Carolina "Any motor vehicle of the age of 35 years or more from the date of manufacture may bear the license plates of the year of manufacture instead of the current registration plates, if the current registration plates are maintained within the vehicle and produced upon the request of any person."

You can look it up by googleing NC GS 20-63(D).

Also, any car 35 years old or more do not require inspections. This is harder to dig out but you can start at NC GS 20-20-183.

So in 5 more years I will be on the look out for a 1984 NC Tag.
