Philip Seymour Hoffman
Found dead this morning in his apartment on the bathroom floor with a needle in his arm. did a quick search and there has been a batch of bad smack being sold that is 50% heroin and 50% fenanyl. Instant death is how the Police and Medical types describe it.
He probably never knew he was dead until he hit the floor... I liked him in Tru and Twister but didn't like him in The Master. |

I had family members get caught up in a cult controlled by an individual very much like the character he played. As such, I could not look at his performance with out a lot of remorse.

Great actor who really seemed to get into every role. I'd imagine when you're constantly changing your "reality" in your head, it's hard to cope with the actual.

When my Uncle dies suddenly, my Aunt discovered that he had "donated" all their money (his retirement, the kids college fund and even took out another mortgage on their house) and my aunt and 3 kids were left broke. My Dad stepped in and paid off the mortgage and helped them get back on their feet but all 3 kids left home soon after and got as far away from my Aunt and the situation as they could (Hawaii, Texas and Oregon). With the exception of the oldest, they all have "daddy" issues and married men much older than themselves and it took years before they were able to act indpendent of their husbands. I was amazed because my Uncle was a very intelligent man, MENSA level, but my Aunt was no rocket scientist. Like I said, my wife made me go to see it and I walked out 1/3rd the way thru and sat in my car until the movie was over. |

For whatever reason, it appears in the case of some actors, musicians, artists and other highly creative types, there exists a fine line between genius and insanity. Seen it way too many times; usually the story ends tragically. Sorry to see him go, he's left us some very memorable moments in film.
As far as EST goes, there seems like there is a cult on every block nowadays. Some of them like Scientology have filtered there way into the corporate ideologies of certain MAJOR American companies. Scary..... |

What's wrong with society?!
An actor dies from a drug overdose...all over the news. A soldier/cop/firefighter dies protecting our society...silence. I have zero sympathy for actors that spend their "hard earned" money on drugs and die. It's despicable that media glorifies them, just as they glorify and name mass murderers - without naming the victims who lost their lives. V.B. |

That's a fair point.
Probably the difference is that an actor emotionally touches more people, more directly than some anonymous kid dying in some far away land in a war people are generally tired of fighting. Doesn't matter that the emotions projected by the actor and the emotions felt by the audience are contrived, fake, and cheap. We have little to no emotional connection to a soldier atomized by a roadside bomb. It's not fair and it is a shame. But that's who we are, generally. |
