more ebay ranting

Just sold a car on ebay, an 89 volvo 240DL 5-speed. Once again, someone bid on the car, won the auction, and I never heard from them. This morning their 48 hour period for leaving a depost will be up.

This is the third time this has happened to me. I can't stand these people who bid, and decide not to respond or communicate if they got cold feet. I would much rather hear from them that they made a mistake. With the new feedback rules you can't even bash them

... it does suck. However, I called and spoke to a rep when I got a "no-payer". Supposedly, this is a 50% death blow to them being banned from Ebay. Another infraction, and they are gone.

Fingers crossed you get a better deal if you re-auction the item.

Pain in the arse - one of the reasons I like fixed prices. First on my door step / first to give me a deposit gets it...

...otherwise cock off!

It might be worthwhile whinging to ebay about the buyer who didn't buy - you might be able to get some discount for the next advert (but look out for those flying pigs).

this is good to hear! its been a few years since I sold a car on ebay, so maybe some rules have been changed.

last time, the issue was that ebay makes the seller wait 7 full days for communication from the buyer, so if some jerkoff bids and wins, then does nothing, it still messes up your sales plan in trying to get rid of the car because you have to wait so long

I finally broke down and reactivated my paypal and ebay accounts. Used paypal once in the last year or so and not bought anything on ebay. I was going to sell some stuff for Christmas but didn't get around to it. ebay and paypal suck and I still feel no good toward them. If I could take back all of the time and all of the transactions I probably would.

just had a very interesting conversation with a useful ebay guy, and I do have few options.

First one I hadn't considered was the possibility of sending a second chance offer to the next highest bidder after my 48 hour time limit, not ebays resolution time limit.

The guy was explaining I can do both my nailing to the wall of the original bidder, and a second chance offer, but only have waiting out a 2 day period to open a non payment case, and a 4 day period to wait for it to close (and the guy to potentially respond), THEN I could nail the first guy to the wall with the infraction, and make a second chance offer to the next guy in line.

however, if time is critical to get rid of the item, I can skip that and just make a second chance offer immediately to someone else. The downside is I can't infract the first guy, but I consider it a better trade off since I need to get this car out of the way.

The one thing I can't do, is set up an non payment case and make a second chance offer while the case is still open it turns out. If I do that and sell the car to the second buyer, and at the end of the case the first buyer eventually pays before the time limit, then now its my fault and I have to provide the item to both people. (hard to do with a car )

I have to say, ebay customer support is a lot better than it was, they are really helpful on the phone

I started on an aggressive campaign to sell everything I could on Ebay to clear my house by the time the youngest goes to college in two years, and one of the first auctions was a non-payer. I was very impressed with Ebay customer service. The guy answered every question, did whatever he had to relative to the non-payer, discussed the 10% Ebay fee, et cet. Non-payers get zapped pretty hard, eg. two infractions and you're banned.

If I were "John", I would just put it back out there and see what the market bears. I ended up getting more money once I reposted the item not paid for. My .02 and GOOD LUCK !!!

Good to hear ebay are behaving within some sort of "fair" framework. I know fair is a relative thing but it sounds like they are making an effort.

Sell on Craigslist.

BTW - there are 3rd party blacklist sites as well. Post as much info as you can (including their nickname, real name, address, and phone # if included in the "Your Item Sold" message) about the dumb prick to the blacklist. Yeah, may seem a bit harsh, but too bad.

Yes. They have always been very helpful to me.

I think my worst case was this:

I sold an NLA distributor to someone for $200. In the ad, I spelled out that I am a diesel guy and know nothing about distributors, and that the buyer should compare part #s etc. to make sure that the part fits his car etc. etc.

Well, three days after, I got a message from the buyer; it said something like this:

Quote:
this part does no fit my 74 450sl. I woud like to return.
We went through about three rounds of messages, with him insisting that the part does NOT fit his car and me inquiring first if he was sure that they were attempting to install it correctly and then inquiring if he had double-checked part #s (he never gave me a straight answer on that). Anyway, in the third message, I finished by saying that if he wanted to return the dizzy, he would have to initiate the returns process. The next message from him:

Quote:
i would like to return the item.
Some confusion ensues as I explain to him that he actually needs to initiate the process on his end by doing something more than just messaging me. A few days later, this shows up in my inbox:

Quote:
New Significantly Not as Described Dispute: Case #PP-***-***-***-***
Whaaaat? I message the buyer to explain that this is not the right way to do it... the item was as described, and I don't want to refund the shipping to him as this would require me to do. After getting nothing clear from him, I called PayPal and they helped me clear it up, showing me how I could send a partial refund despite the type of case.

So then I wait for a week. Nothing comes in the mail. I message him for a tracking number, and he just replies that it's "in the mail". I message him back, again asking for a tracking number. No response.

Another week later, I am ready to report him as not having shipped the item when a battered, unpadded box shows up in the mail. Miraculously, the dizzy appears to be unhurt. But why did the box take two weeks to arrive?

HE SENT IT MEDIA MAIL!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't do returns anymore.

So the ebay /paypal take on regular auctions is approaching 18%,,, what would their take be on the car, about the same?
im thinking autotrader is a better way.

I'm really not hip on ebay for selling anything over a couple bengies anymore, its gotten out of control. They go to great lengths to keep people ignorant of their rate creeps. Around 6 mos ago just sending money thru paypal was at 2.3 % and all of the sudden, it jumped to over 4.1%

How much was it to advertise your car in Autotrader back in the days before eBay?

you would be surprised how little action you get advertising a car there. After all, its not a turbo. Advertised there for a while. Even tried to GIVE away a running driving turbo 700 series parts car a few years ago, and no bites on turbo bricks.

This is a 200 series wagon, so they do enjoy a certain following and the car generated a decent level of interest on fleabay. It may become the property of a PP forum member shortly however
