Anyone Remember the Mustang Introduction?
I was a car crazy fourteen year old, almost fifteen on that April night. I got my license when I was fourteen by taking drivers ed and was driving a $12.50 '48/'47 Chevy.
The announcement was on TV one night including the $2,3xx price. It might as well have been ten million to me because there was no way I could afford one. A week later there was a poppy red six cylinder three speed down the street. Anyone else remember the day?

I don't recall the exact moment but I do recall the wow factor as a kid.
Our neighbor won a Mustang at a church raffle that same year.

I seem to remember a big billboard with a picture of a mustang and the price, $2399.00 and thinking cool!
At the time I was driving a 1960 Simca which I paid $200 for. Dad loaned me the money to buy it. (It was nimble, rode nicely and got good fuel economy) but it was a real POS mechanically.

People went bonkers when the Mustang came out. We were only at least 10 years behind Europe on the concept and further behind than that on engineering, but hey, the Mustang was ours. The older brother of a buddy of mine had one approx. '66 - a six. Their old man bought an XKE 2+2 not long after. Funny looking car but wild to ride in, which I did a couple of times, my knees up to my chest.

I started the thread in hopes we could talk about cars on a car forum fora change. I didn't start it to receive indirect insults, but whatever you think.

A friend of mine's dad was the automotive purchasing agent for the local (Baltimore) phone company. he got one of the earliest '65's ( not 64 1/2) in the area. convertible, power disc brakes, 4 bbl 289 ( 225 HP). We had great fun in that car. Quite quick. Very skinny bias tires.

My district's transportation director daily-drives a 66 fastback. Cherry red it looks like it's brand new. I don't know what the running gear is. She got it new and it's the only car she's ever owned. I believe she told me she's rebuilt the motor twice.

Boy, do I remember the Mustang.
I was in third grade, and my science teacher was using the Mustang's base price to illustrate a point about smoking. He drew a comparision between the price of the Mustang, and the cost of a pack of cigarettes, followed up by how many packs/time period it would take to equal the cost of the Mustang. That was the moment I decided not to ever take up tobacco. I really wanted the Mustang! Ended up having a series of Mustangs in the seventies and eighties, including the only new car my wife and I ever bought (so far), an 82 5.0 GLX with every option on it, so many it had two Maroney stickers. Honeymooned in my 67 convertible in 1979. We lived in Arizona, so of course it had factory air, and the people we met on the North Atlantic Coast were amazed that we had a convertible with air. Also had a tilt wheel, 4 bbl, 4 speed and AM/FM. I'd added chrome magnum 500s. But, what an impression that original Mustang had on me and my classmates. Suddenly, the coolest parents were the ones with a new Mustang. I don't recall another car that had that effect. Yeah, Jags were also cool, but the closest most of us could get to that was that Revell model, the one with the red OTS on the box art. In 1964, Dad had a ponton 220S sedan, Mom had a 61 Ford wagon, and the family old car was a 1940 Lincoln Continental Cabriolet, which is still in the family. A new Mustang would have trumped any of those cars at the time...... Jim

The local pharmacist bought a new white mustang v8 for his son in my class. One night he ran it out in a field with some other kids in it and totaled it. So his dad bought him a new 65 corvette, light blue with the base engine and an automatic transmission.
Heh heh!

I remember when they came out in April 1964. They were super cool.
I used to have a 1967 Cougar, the big brother ( 3" longer wheelbase, otherwise the same mechanically). Regretted getting rid of it for a 1972 Buick Skylark Custom Sport sedan. Then a few years ago found THIS one - (ebay) a survivor that had had been stored in a warehouse since 1988, utterly original, unrusted, never hit, box stock original, down to the factory pinstripes that they had, original books and manuals, keys, California black plates and even the original selling dealer plate frames on it. Just 39k original miles on it too! So I bought it. I had a Mustang restoration facility add power steering and disc brakes to make it a pleasant safe driver. Driving it is more fun than watching the entire French air force crash into a fireworks factory!
