Has anyone here ever used a plastic welder?

I have a very heavy plastic pressurized overflow tank+ rad cap on the 1986 G30 6.2L diesel. It cracked and I bought a new one. I would like to save the old one by repairing it along the seam where it cracked.

Anyone have any experience with a plastic welder?

A guy on another forum said it worked for him but gave no details.

Thanks!

I've watched a local auto body shop repair bumper covers and side moldings with a pro plastic welder. We talked about the home garage kits and the opinion was that they are "okay" for small cracks but you have to be patient since they don't get very hot and have the right sticks to match the material being welded.

I have used a HF unit on occasion. It works. Practice on scraps. Use scraps from the part you are repairing if you can't positively match a rod. Get one from a junkyard to practice on and use for scraps.

DON'T breath the fumes.

Three puddles make one puddle for a good weld.

If you don't know why it cracked it might never be trustworthy.

Yes I have plastic welded. I've never had success with my HF version. However, years ago I bought a plastic welder at a garage sale specifically sold for welding radiators, tanks etc. It looks like an electric soldering iron with a foot. The foot has a vertical tube attached about and inch high. You feed rods of plastic thru the tube where it gets heated, liquifies and flows out the bottom. I've welded quite a few things with it over the years. You have to match the plastics. The welding 'rod' is sold in rolls of different formulations. I mainly used it for welding plastic nubs on plastic barrels so I could install handles for carrying them when canoeing. I also repaired a few broked things over the years.
