Auctioning off 5 cars (3 old benz) at the classic car auction in KC
It has been slow at the lot, and I decided to spice things up a little for me. I've sold a few cars up there, but never brought more than one. 3 of the cars will be sold during the televised portion of the event on NBC sports network. Should run from around 4:00-5:00 central time. All 5 have a reserve. A few of them I wouldn't bother, but at this sale if you put no reserve, people get concerned that there's something wrong if the seller willing to take that risk.
A few years ago, when I was selling the fintail, I had you all place your bets as far as pricing. Closest total number gets a dollar to their paypal. It was also Coda's first road trip under my ownership to Kansas City. Very nice highway car. First to run is a 1990 560SEL. Showing a bit over 120,000 miles and I believe actual. Very nice shape inside and out. The previous owner I purchased it from said the owner before him was a judge that had the car over 10 years. I gave $900 for it. Fixed the sunroof, driver's window, replaced a few hoses under the hood, adjusted the SLS so it sits level, repainted the roof due to previous duct tape damage from red neck sunroof repair. About $1500 into it total. Current list of needs would be overdue for a timing chain and guides, AC inop, rear SLS accumulators stiff. No reason to disclose this for an as-is auction, but would tell someone if they asked. I will be standing next to the car to answer any questions as it runs up to the block. 1990 Mercedes-Benz 560SEL for sale by Mecum Auction Next is a 1982 380SL was a trade in to Kansas City Mercedes dealer. Showing 80,000 miles (nothing to document if its accurate) 12 year ownership according to the title. Very nice repaint on the outside, interior original and acceptable, normal wear. Barely ran when I purchased it thanks to rotten and misrouted vacuum lines. Fixed that and the car runs great. Nothing else of note popped up in the inspection. Gave $3000 for it. 1982 Mercedes-Benz 380SL for sale by Mecum Auction The first prime car to go is the Imperial. This is a reluctant sale, but the biggest reason is the fact this car has no factory AC. Best quote I got to install was $3000, which I would probably not get back that investment. It would also look very out of place having a shiny compressor and AC fittings under that engine pay with beautiful patina. This is an all original survivor car with nice paint, excellent interior and chrome. 440 V8 engine. I've put 600 trouble free miles on it. Shouldn't need anything but a new home. Gave $8000 and another $800 to ship it here. With the little bit of upkeep I did, I'm a little over $9000 into it. 1966 Chrysler Imperial Coupe for sale by Mecum Auction Next is the 1961 Beetle that I've owned for a little over a year. Got burned bad on this one. eBay fraudulent seller claimed original paint and described the car as a time capsule, like a 5 year old used car that's been kept up would look. Runs and drives perfect. Car showed up and was obviously not original paint. Old Earl Scheib closed door paint job. Leaks everywhere. Low oil pressure when warmed up. Pops out of fourth unless you hold it in. Arrived with no brakes (fixed). I've thought about what to do with it and decided to just cut my losses. An as-is auction is the perfect place to do this. The good is this car attracts a crowd wherever it goes. No exaggeration, the few car shows I took it to, it was mobbed. Really drives nice and sounds perfect, great original interior. Very little rust. The rat roddish Herbie patina look has sort of grown on me. I paid $6000 for the bucket of bolts, another $800 to ship, another few hundred in parts. This one is anybody's guess, since it brings out a huge emotional response out of people. 1961 Volkswagen Beetle for sale by Mecum Auction The last one is a wildcard. I had to pay a $300 entry fee per car to get in the sale, and they told me if I wanted to run one more, I wouldn't have to pay the fee. So only $150 to ship it up there. Just for fun, I chose the 240D I had listed on this forum for WAY too cheap. Has new motor mounts, fixed the vacuum issues, and did a tranny service. Nice driving little car now with normal small oil/diesel leaks, and non-functional AC. Cool Tandy Car phone. I trolled you guys a bit on the mecum listing. 1983 Mercedes-Benz 240D for sale by Mecum Auction http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/mercedes-cars-sale/351456-fs-clean-83-240d-automatic-263-000-miles-%241500.html So place your bets. The final three should run on live TV, or you can watch the Mecum website for up to the minute results.

Now that I think about it, the bet for the paypal dollar should only apply to the 3 Mercedes, since this is a Mercedes forum.

Great, thanks for the heads up. I set my recorder.
I say the 240d fetches $2k. That's what I paid for your same car sans moon roof but with 150k miles.8 years ago. The SL ought to fetch a good $8 to $12k huh?The SEL I reckon would fetch $2500 and maybe double that if the right audience is present. The bug ought to be interesting as it may represent commercial advertising value for some local business. I have seen a bug inside an 'old navy' store. Good luck to ya. The Imperial also ought to catch the fancy.

Good luck with the sale! With auctions it is a crap shoot. Some cars go low others go high. I hope your highs outweigh your lows.

560sel sold for $3750... Good enough.
380sl no sale at a "$5500". It was a fake bid run up, no real bidders on that car

looks like your 240 is not alone, I saw a white 240 4-speed also listed. Be interested to see how the two cars do compared

About the same condition. My 240 has better interior, but the $4000 one is a 4speed showing 120k with fancy new whirewalls. A few rust bubbles.
